The Chinese New Year celebration is an event that momentarily brings a part of my city to a standstill. For decades, the Chinese community in Carabobo State has grown significantly, to the point where celebrations like today's cover large areas, joined by us Venezuelans to enjoy the spectacle it offers.
Entre Fuegos artificiales y tradiciones - Mi experiencia en el Año Nuevo Chino
La celebración del año nuevo chino es un evento que paraliza, por un instante, una parte de mi ciudad. Por décadas la comunidad china en el estado Carabobo, ha aumento significativamente, al punto que celebraciones como la de hoy, abarcan grandes espacios, a los que nos sumamos los venezolanos, y disfrutamos del espectáculo que ofrece.
This year seems to be very special for them. I don't know their traditions in detail, but I know that the Year of the Horse, which began this past February 17th, holds great meaning. Based on Feng Shui, every 60 years the Fire Horse arrives—a special symbol representing momentum, freedom, and rapid success. While the Dragon is the most sacred (associated with imperial power), the Horse is the most admired for its nobility and utility.
Este año al parecer es muy especial para ellos. No conozco sus tradiciones a detalle, pero se que el año del caballo, el cual comenzó el pasado 17 de febrero, es de mucho significado. Basado en el Feng Shui, cada 60 años llega el caballo de fuego, un símbolo especial porque representa ímpetu, libertad y el éxito rápido. Mientras que el Dragón es el más sagrado (asociado al poder imperial), el Caballo es el más admirado por su nobleza y utilidad.
Although I don't believe in the zodiac or its symbolism, I am interested in learning about other nations and their beliefs, deeply respecting their culture; that’s why I’m interested in getting to know it. I was able to talk to a Chinese gentleman while watching the dragon dance, and he was the one explaining what I mentioned earlier. He also told me that fireworks have a meaning: they believe they are clearing the path for the coming year.
Aunque no creo en el zodiaco y su simbología, me interesa saber sobre otras naciones y en que creen, respetando profundamente su cultura, por eso me intereso en conocerla. Pude conversar con un señor chino mientras veía la danza del dragón, el fue quien me estuvo explicando lo que comenté anteriormente. También me decía que los fuegos artificiales tienen un significado, ellos creen que están limpiando el camino para el año que entra.
Another curious fact was the scheduled time for the fireworks: 7:38 PM. It turns out that each number has a meaning based on its phonetics; this part is more complex and extensive, but basically, choosing 7:38 is a way of saying: let the vital energy rise (7) so that life (3) may flourish in prosperity and wealth (8).
Otro dato curioso fue la hora programada para lanzar los fuegos artificiales, fue a las 7:38 pm. Resulta que cada número según su fonética al hablar tiene un significado, está parte si es más compleja y extensa, pero básicamente elegir las 7:38 es una forma de decir: que la energía vital se eleve (7) para que la vida (3) florezca en prosperidad y riqueza (8).
The truth is, I had a great time; I learned more about them and had a wonderful time with my family as we went out together and enjoyed a 12-minute firework show. This tradition has been celebrated in my city for years; previously, the highway next to the Chinese club would be closed, but today the spaces of the city's largest shopping mall were used so more people could enjoy the show.
Lo cierto es que la pasé muy bien, aprendí más de ellos, la pasé genial con mi familia porque salimos juntos a pasear, y disfrutamos de un espectáculo de 12 minutos de fuegos artificiales. Está tradición lleva años celebrandose mi ciudad, antes se trancaba la autopista al lado del club chino, hoy se usaron los espacios del centro comercial más grande de la ciudad para que más personas pudieran disfrutar del espectáculo.
