Llevamos unos cuantos días de limpieza y fumigación, pues teníamos una invasión de cucarachas. Debo decirles que primero intenté agotar todas las opciones que no implicaran el uso de pesticidas o productos tóxicos. Esparcí, hojas de laurel en los cajones, hojas (y flores) de la planta "flor de la reina" que me han dicho que repelen estos bichos. Pero no fueron efectivos y las cucarachas continuaron reproduciéndose a ritmo acelerado.

We have been cleaning and fumigating for a few days, as we had an invasion of cockroaches. I must tell you that first I tried to exhaust all the options that did not involve the use of pesticides or toxic products. I scattered, bay leaves in the drawers, leaves (and flowers) of the "queen flower" plant that I have been told repel these bugs. But they were not effective, and the cockroaches continued to reproduce at a rapid rate.
Antes fumigábamos la casa con cierta frecuencia, porque vivimos en una zona que está en bastante contacto con la naturaleza, donde hay muchos jardines y árboles rodeando las casas, por lo que hay muchos insectos. Mosquitos, ciempiés, abejas, avispas, arañas, grillos, cigarrones y las peligrosas termitas. Capaz les dé risa que de todos estos insectos califique de peligrosas a las termitas, pero son de las más complicadas de combatir y el techo de la casa es de madera.
Con el tiempo, se hizo cada vez menos frecuente la fumigación. Siendo sinceros fue porque los insecticidas se volvieron inaccesibles por su alto costo, pero fue bueno porque nos permitió explorar opciones más amigables con el ambiente. Hay muchas plantas repelentes que se pueden sembrar en los alrededores de la casa y opciones preparadas con ácido bórico, bicarbonato y otros componentes mucho menos tóxicos.
Before, we used to fumigate the house with some frequency, because we live in an area that is in close contact with nature, where there are many gardens and trees surrounding the houses, so there are many insects. Mosquitoes, centipedes, bees, wasps, spiders, crickets, grasshoppers and the dangerous termites. It might make you laugh that of all these insects termites are classified as dangerous, but they are one of the most difficult to combat and the roof of the house is made of wood.
Over time, spraying became less frequent. To be honest, it was because insecticides became inaccessible due to their high cost, but it was good because it allowed us to explore more environmentally friendly options. There are many repellent plants that can be planted around the house and options prepared with boric acid, bicarbonate and other much less toxic components.
Pero, cuando la situación se sale de control, toca recurrir a los insecticidas. Esta vez la situación estaba fuera de control. Sacamos todo lo que había en gavetas y muebles y procedimos a fumigar con Baygon. Después abandonamos la casa por una hora, dejándola cerrada. Cuando entramos nuevamente, había un cementerio de cucarachas, que decidí no fotografiar porque me pareció un poco desagradable.
But, when the situation gets out of control, it's time to resort to insecticides. This time the situation was out of control. We removed everything that was in drawers and furniture and proceeded to fumigate with Baygon. Then we left the house for an hour, leaving it locked. When we went back in, there was a graveyard of cockroaches, which I decided not to photograph because I found it a bit off putting.
Abrir ventanas y encender el ventilador fue el siguiente paso (y barrer las cucarachas muertas), había que dejar la casa habitable para la noche. Volver a colocar todo en su sitio, bueno, eso sigue en proceso, incluso varios días después. Es que hay que limpiar cada cosa y estamos aprovechando de botar muchos viejos papeles. Los gabinetes de la cocina aún huelen a insecticida, por lo que los platos y ollas siguen acampando fuera de casa.
Algo que me preocupa es que Blacky (nuestra gata) se ha estado comiendo las cucarachas, las que han muerto por efecto del insecticida y no sé si se podría intoxicar por ello. Aunque hasta ahora no ha mostrado síntomas de sentirse mal.
Opening windows and turning on the fan was the next step (and sweeping up the dead cockroaches), the house had to be made habitable for the night. Putting everything back in place, well, that's still in the works, even several days later. It is that you have to clean everything and we are taking advantage of throwing away many old papers. The kitchen cabinets still smell like bug spray, so the dishes and pots are still camping out.
Something that worries me is that Blacky (our cat) has been eating the cockroaches, the ones that have died from the effect of the insecticide and I don't know if she could get poisoned from it. Although she so far has not shown any symptoms of feeling ill.
Es impresionante la cantidad de cosas que uno acumula a lo largo de la vida, papeles, facturas, lápices a los que le quedaban apenas un par de centímetros, bolígrafos secos, relojes sin batería, ligas, clips, frascos, revistas, tornillos, cargadores de teléfonos que ya no existen, cables, zarcillos sin compañeros y muchas cosas más, algunas de las cuales no recordamos de donde salieron. Creo que no hay que esperar a que haya una invasión de cucarachas para hacer una depuración de los cajones, siempre es necesario y sano dejar ir el pasado y hacer espacio para lo nuevo. Una vez leí que un criterio que puedes usar es preguntarte: ¿cuándo lo usaste por última vez?, si la respuesta es más de un año quizá debas regalarlo, venderlo o botarlo según sea el caso.
The amount of things that one accumulates throughout life is impressive: papers, bills, pencils that only had a couple of centimeters left, dry pens, watches without batteries, rubber bands, clips, bottles, magazines, screws, chargers of telephones that no longer exist, cables, tendrils without partners and many other things, some of which we do not remember where they came from. I think you shouldn't wait for a cockroach invasion to purge your drawers, it's always necessary and healthy to let go of the past and make room for the new. I once read that one criterion you can use is to ask yourself: when did you last use it? If the answer is more than a year, you may have to give it away, sell it or throw it away as the case may be.
Poco a poco la casa va volviendo a la normalidad, pero definitivamente la casa se siente más ligera, con muy buena vibra. Ahora ustedes cuéntenme cómo lidian con las cucarachas y otras plagas.
