No sé si ya les he contado que, cuando me gradué en la universidad, mi hermana y yo decidimos mudarnos a Caracas, donde vivimos aproximadamente cinco años, así que mi última visita fue un poco nostálgica. Como sabía que solo nos quedaríamos unos días, traté de aprovechar al máximo nuestra estancia y caminé bastante.
I don't know if I've already told you that when I graduated from college, my sister and I decided to move to Caracas, where we lived for about five years, so my last visit was a bit nostalgic. Since I knew we would only be staying for a few days, I tried to make the most of our stay and walked a lot.
Lo que más me sorprendió fue lo cambiado que está el centro. Antes, cuando oíamos hablar del centro, pensábamos en calles repletas de vendedores ambulantes, basura, delincuencia... En definitiva, teníamos que prepararnos mentalmente para caminar por lugares completamente abandonados. Ahora, es gratificante ver cómo ha cambiado el panorama: hay calles decoradas, las plazas están más limpias y aún hay vendedores ambulantes, aunque en menor cantidad y mejor ubicados. Además, hay muchos más sitios agradables para sentarse a tomar un café.
What surprised me most was how much the city center has changed. Before, when we heard about the city center, we thought of streets full of street vendors, trash, crime... In short, we had to mentally prepare ourselves to walk through completely abandoned places. Now, it's gratifying to see how the landscape has changed: the streets are decorated, the squares are cleaner, and there are still street vendors, although fewer in number and better located. In addition, there are many more pleasant places to sit and have a coffee.
Otro de los lugares donde me encantó pasear fue Chacao, una zona céntrica que siempre se ha considerado ideal para la clase media alta. Recordé por qué me gustaba tanto. Se siente una energía diferente; no sabría definirla, es como estar en otra ciudad.
Another place I loved walking around was Chacao, a central area that has always been considered ideal for the upper middle class. I remembered why I liked it so much. You feel a different energy there; I can't quite define it, but it's like being in another city.
Durante un tiempo, debo admitir que sentí la necesidad de volver: lo dinámica que sería mi rutina, todas las facilidades que tendría para distraerme, lo conveniente que es el transporte... En fin, solo pensé en las cosas positivas. Pero luego pensé que mi vida aquí también es buena y que, tal vez, Dios tenga preparado para mí la oportunidad de crecer en otras tierras. No tengo por qué preocuparme ni dejarme llevar por la nostalgia.
For a while, I must admit that I felt the need to return: how dynamic my routine would be, all the opportunities I would have for distraction, how convenient the transportation is... In short, I only thought about the positive things. But then I thought that my life here is also good and that, perhaps, God has prepared for me the opportunity to grow in other lands. I have no reason to worry or let myself be carried away by nostalgia.
La semana que pasé allí no pude hacer ejercicio, pero creo que las caminatas diarias que hice compensaron muy bien mis entrenamientos. Recordarlo todo despierta en mí las ganas de vivir, aunque sea por una temporada, en un lugar nuevo. Ya veremos qué oportunidades se presentan en mi camino.
I couldn't exercise during the week I spent there, but I think the daily walks I took made up for my workouts. Remembering it all makes me want to live in a new place, even if only for a short time. We'll see what opportunities come my way.
