Today I continue my remarkable journey through the city of Brasília. I find myself at my second stop, guided by the generosity of extraordinary friends who, like so many others, are making their way through this vast green ocean that is the Federal Republic. This metropolis welcomes me with such magnitude that it leaves me speechless; faced with what I admire, I find myself compelled to catch my breath and train my gaze, trying to ensure that my spirit can process the uniqueness of this space.
Continúo hoy mi formidable peregrinación por la ciudad de Brasilia. Me hallo en mi segunda estación, guiado por la generosidad de amistades extraordinarias que, como tantos otros, transitan la migración por este inmenso océano verde de la República Federal. Esta urbe me recibe con una magnitud tal que me deja el maxilar desencajado; ante lo que admiro, me veo obligado a recobrar el aliento y educar la mirada, intentando que el enfoque de mi espíritu logre procesar la singularidad de este espacio.
The plan dictates that I must decipher the Plano Piloto. It is a spectacular monument, a geometry that invites one to soar towards the infinity of this almost paradisiacal landscape. However, upon observing the layout once more, I look to the mirror of reality to understand who conceived this place and how, where the road network flows with absolute naturalness, a benchmark that admits of no questioning. Here one perceives the perfection of Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture fused with Lúcio Costa’s urban planning; the testimony of a nation that accepted the challenge of moving its political heart to these lands.
La planificación dicta que debo descifrar el Plano Piloto. Es un monumento espectacular, una geometría que invita a volar hacia lo infinito de este relieve casi paradisíaco. Sin embargo, al observar nuevamente el trazado, me busco en el espejo de la realidad para comprender quiénes y cómo concibieron este lugar, donde la vialidad fluye con una naturalidad absoluta, un parangón que no admite cuestionamientos. I find myself thinking of that president, Juscelino Kubitschek, and the group of men who joined him in carrying out a project in which I detect no trace of political ideology, but rather the pure synergy of professionals and intellectuals. Against this backdrop, anthropology and sociology soar, intertwined with the wings of the arts and the landscape design of Burle Marx. I almost seem to perceive in the air the scent of Darcy Ribeiro’s thought emanating from these fascinating cultural structures.

Brasília is not just a city; it is the physical testament to a synergy that transcended the political to take root in the human. As I gaze upon its horizons, I realise that its existence was the great act of faith of a country that decided to turn away from the Atlantic and pour its soul into the interior, seeking a true integration of its vast geography. It was a bold attempt to stitch together the seams of a nation through art and reason.
Brasilia no es solo una ciudad; es el testimonio físico de una sinergia que superó lo político para instalarse en lo humano. Al contemplar sus horizontes, comprendo que su existencia fue el gran acto de fe de un país que decidió dejar de mirar hacia el Atlántico para volcar su alma hacia el interior, buscando una integración real de su vasta geografía. Fue el intento audaz de coser las costuras de una nación a través del arte y la razón.
This city embodies the utopia of a different Brazil, a dream carved from concrete and sky where architecture sought not to oppress, but to liberate the spirit. It serves as a reminder that, when intelligence and will come together unburdened by petty ideologies, it is possible to build a future which, decades later, continues to breathe like a living organism. Here, in the silence of its squares and the flow of its avenues, the hope endures that planning and beauty can be the compasses guiding a people towards their highest destiny.
Esta urbe representa la utopía de un Brasil diferente, un sueño tallado en concreto y cielo donde la arquitectura no buscaba oprimir, sino liberar el espíritu. Es el recordatorio de que, cuando la inteligencia y la voluntad se unen sin el lastre de las ideologías pequeñas, es posible edificar un futuro que hoy, décadas después, sigue respirando como un organismo vivo.
