Estoy disfrutando mucho mi estadía en la dinámica y vibrante ciudad de Boa Vista. Esta experiencia está enriqueciendo mi vida personal y valoro enormemente el conocimiento de su gente. En esta grata circunstancia, quiero compartir mi experiencia del acompañamiento a mi nueva amiga Petunia cada domingo a la feria de productos frescos y asequibles para su presupuesto familiar. Llevo cinco semanas compartiendo estas salidas dominicales tan especiales, donde intercambiamos ideas sobre la vida cotidiana. Aprendo mucho de su manera de buscar alimentos frescos, ya que yo, como comprador, no suelo fijarme en detalles diferentes de vegetales como los pepinos, las patatas, las cebollas y los tomates. Por ejemplo, ella siempre busca mazorcas de maíz con el grano blando para poder sancocharlo y comerlo rápido y caliente.
I am really enjoying my stay in the dynamic and vibrant city of Boa Vista. This experience is enriching my personal life and I greatly value the knowledge of its people. In this pleasant circumstance, I want to share my experience of accompanying my new friend Petunia every Sunday to the fair for fresh and affordable products for her family budget. I have been sharing these special Sunday outings for five weeks now, where we exchange ideas about everyday life. I learn a lot from her way of looking for fresh food, as I, as a shopper, don't tend to look for different details of vegetables such as cucumbers, potatoes, onions and tomatoes. For example, she always looks for corn cobs with soft kernels so that she can parboil them and eat them quickly and hot.
Recorremos juntos el bullicioso ambiente de la feria, donde la algarabía de los vendedores resuena en mis oídos. Mi amiga Petunia es un personaje de carácter firme. Se desplaza con paso rápido por los pasillos de la feria, deteniéndose con determinación a buscar limones jugosos; ese es su objetivo principal cada semana. Es más, me pide que la acompañe como si fuera su seguridad personal.
We wander together through the bustling atmosphere of the fair, where the din of the vendors echoes in my ears. My friend Petunia is a strong-willed character. She moves briskly through the aisles of the fair, stopping determinedly to look for juicy lemons; that is her main goal every week. What's more, she asks me to accompany her as if I were her personal security.
Durante estas jornadas, Petunia siempre tiene anotado en su mente comprar los vegetales necesarios para preparar su delicioso jugo verde. Selecciona los manojos de perejil con una mirada aguda de gavilán. Pero, es al buscar los pepinos cuando realmente agudiza sus pequeños ojos, asegurándose de que las puntas no estén amarillas. Este es un aprendizaje valioso para mí, ya que nunca me había fijado en ese detalle al comprar para mi propio consumo.
During these days, Petunia always makes a note in her mind to buy the necessary vegetables to prepare her delicious green juice. She selects the bunches of parsley with the sharp eyes of a sparrowhawk. But, it is when looking for the cucumbers that she really sharpens her little eyes, making sure that the tips are not yellow. This is a valuable learning for me, as I had never noticed that detail when buying for my own consumption.
De la misma manera, revisa con atención las zanahorias, las manzanas y la piña. Con el aguacate fue curiosa: no pasó su prueba porque no sonaba. Los maraqueaba cerca de su oído y, al no percibir el sonido de la semilla, lo descartaba. Poco a poco, las bolsas se fueron acumulando y yo, como su improvisado "guardia", las cargaba en mis mochilas.
In the same way, she carefully checks carrots, apples and pineapple. She was curious about the avocado: it did not pass her test because it did not sound. She checked them close to her ear and, not perceiving the sound of the seed, she discarded it. Little by little, the bags accumulated and I, as his improvised ‘guard’, carried them in my backpacks.
De esta peculiar manera de comprar, comprendo que se trata de una enseñanza familiar transmitida de generación en generación, algo que lleva en su ADN como herencia de sus padres. Finalmente, completamos las compras de los alimentos. Al llegar a su casa, me libero de la mochila cargada. Nos recibe la madre de Petunia, a quien le comento con asombro la meticulosa forma en que su hija elige los vegetales. Ella me explica que su dinero tiene valor y por eso no puede permitirse desperdiciar alimentos.
From this peculiar way of shopping, I understand that this is a family teaching passed down from generation to generation, something he carries in his DNA as an inheritance from his parents. Finally, we completed the grocery shopping. Arriving at her house, I free myself from the loaded backpack. We are greeted by Petunia's mother, to whom I comment in amazement at the meticulous way her daughter chooses her vegetables. She explains that her money has value and she can't afford to waste food.
Reflexiono sobre la gran validez de estos conocimientos y saberes tradicionales, ya que los alimentos deben ser los mejores productos que ofrecen nuestros agricultores para que cubran las alacenas de nuestros hogares.

Petunia's mother emphasises that ‘your money's worth’ and that therefore food cannot be wasted. This statement reflects an attitude of responsibility in the management of economic resources and a concern to avoid food waste, a major problem in today's society.
