I have been needing a new computer for a VERY LONG time, but it was still working so I kept putting it off. I was using a Mac mini purchased in 2017 or 18 but the actual model was made in 2014. It was running Mac High Sierra and I never updated the OS because I strongly believe that every company tends to enshittify everything LOL.
It had 8GB of RAM which at the time was pretty great, when it was new everything ran snappy and all my software for making art/editing videos etc. worked super well. Over the last year things started to go downhill. Discord and Brave refused any further updates because my OS was too old, certain sites and extensions struggled and were super slow, my editing softwares were running slower and taking ages to export. Basically everything pretty quickly started to become frustrating....
Last week I finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade. I had been researching mini PCs, new Mac minis and full PCs to try to figure out what would be the best value and would make sense for my workflow. I ended up going with a gaming PC and as of today it works fantastically, however I have run into a hell of a lot of snags that I didn't expect!
HIVE KEYCHAIN
Setting up keychain via a .kc file is easy peasy and I have done it many times across multiple browsers with no issues. I made a fresh backup on my mac and brought it over to my PC. Using a fresh Brave install I downloaded the extension, entered my master pass for keychain and it gave me an error: it said I needed to use the same master password to decrypt and I definitely was. I typed that password in literally thousands of times over the years so there was no doubt.
I did all the things I thought could fix the issue, uninstalled the extension and reinstalled. Tried to install on Firefox: same error. Restarted computer/broswer, no dice. Made another fresh .kc export also no dice!
I was just about ready to give up for a bit because I was out of ideas. then I had one last thought, I always change the file name to add a signifier so I know which backup is fresh, think accountsXXX.kc, this has never caused an issue in the past.
I deleted the additional info and renamed the file simply to accounts.kc and it worked!!!!! Stoodkev assured me that changing the file name should not be an issue as long as the extension is intact so I am chalking that one up to a mystery..
Incompatible hard drive and files
The next major issue I had was that I made a backup of my mac on an external hard drive, then connected to my PC to transfer important files.
- the PC did not recognize the drive at all
after loads of googling I managed to make the drive appear but it was showing blank with no files. Turns out that the drive would need to be formatted a different way to be compatible with PC, hmmmmm.
Next I used a USB key to try to transfer some files, that worked fine but when I tried to open my documents on PC they were all incompatible 😂 Another silly thing where mac encodes a certain way and PC can't read it. I had to go back to my MAC and re-export a bunch of files and PDFs so they would work.
At this point I have things mostly set up to my liking and can get back to work for real however I still don't have my graphics monitor hooked up because I am using it as a screen for my mac and don't want to change the setup just yet. This limits my ability to make art as I primarily use my graphics monitor and pen!
Also I am still adjusting to windows layout and file system but that's a whole other rant LOL. I also made lots of customizations to the layout and look because I need it to be aesthetically pleasing <3
I am now able to start curating Alien Art Hive again and hopefully make some new art soon :)
