Ever wondered what it was like to step into the Soviet Union in the 1960s? I had a taste of that experience, despite not being alive during that era. There's a place that transports you back in time, and all it takes is a bus ride from Chisinau to Tiraspol. Tiraspol, a city in Transnistria, embodies a pro-Russian spirit, echoing the atmosphere of the 1960s Soviet Union.
The trip was awe-inspiring, not just because of the carefully preserved setting, but also the manner in which everything functioned – the police, the signage, and the overall way of life. It was like stepping into a time capsule, where women strolled the streets clad in attire reminiscent of the 1960s, even in the biting cold that felt akin to Siberia.
Yearning for a cup of coffee, I entered a store and asked for one. The lady at the counter simply said "5". Perplexed, I inquired about the currency, and she repeated, "5". It turned out to be rubles, throwing me into a whirlwind of realization that I was truly in Russia. Card payments were a no-go, and finding an ATM in the city was a futile endeavor. It hit me – life here was a far cry from the conveniences we're accustomed to.
In a fortunate turn of events, my friend graciously paid for my coffee, but I realized I was stranded without access to money. Plastic cards were mere decorations, and digital transactions were unheard of. This experience with its plastic coins, absence of card payments, lack of cellphone network, and a populace seemingly frozen in a bygone era left an indelible mark.
Though overwhelmed, I decided to take a stroll through the city, soaking in the sights before making my way back to Chisinau that night. I knew I would return to Tiraspol, but next time, I'll be armed with cash, ready to truly embrace this captivating time warp.
