Stress is part of life, but I’ve noticed there are certain habits and situations that make it way worse for me. Over time, I’ve figured out a few simple swaps that help me stay grounded instead of spiraling. I’m not a mental health expert — just someone who’s been learning through trial and error.
Here are three stress triggers I’ve run into, and what I’ve started doing to handle them better.
⚠️ 1. Constant Notifications
Between gaming, crypto updates, Discord chats, and everyday messages, my phone and computer can feel like they’re shouting at me nonstop. It’s hard to focus, and I end up feeling drained.
What I do instead:
I let my phone die on purpose sometimes — no charging, no distractions. I use that window to reconnect with my family, take a walk, or just sit quietly. It’s like hitting a reset button.
⚠️ 2. Trying to Fix Everything at Once
When things pile up — chores, work, errands — I get stuck in “fix-it mode.” I try to do everything at once, and it usually leaves me more stressed than when I started.
What I do instead:
I break things into tiny wins. I make a list of what needs to be done and complete one task at a time. Even just clearing one corner of the room or replying to one message helps me feel like I’m making progress.
⚠️ 3. Skipping My Night Walk
If I miss my nightly walk around the block, I feel it the next day. That quiet time helps me decompress, and skipping it means I carry stress into the morning.
What I do instead:
I’ve made it non-negotiable. Even if it’s raining or I’m tired, I take that walk. It’s my way of clearing the mental clutter before bed.
Stress isn’t always avoidable, but I’ve learned that small changes can make a big difference. Swapping out a few habits has helped me feel more in control — and I hope it helps someone else too.
What’s one thing you’ve stopped doing because it made your stress worse? I’d love to hear it.
