Amigos, ¡estoy un poco muy oxidada!, qué mal me han caído estas semanas sin poder sentarme a escribir y editar como me gusta aquí, sean pacientes conmigo por favor, les aseguro que dentro de pocos post volveremos al tono fluido-creativo-cafecito entre amigos que tanto nos agrada mientras comentamos estas mini aventuras.

Y no solo me siento acartonada para escribir, también me sentí así mientras hacía una pre-selección de las opciones de telas que me parecían mejor para este proyecto, varias veces perdí el norte fijándome en opciones nada viables, y también dudada constantemente de las selecciones mas adecuadas.

Fuera por el material o el estampado, algo ha cambiado evidentemente en la calidad de los textiles en el mercado de mi país, noto una diferencia en la densidad de las clásicas gabardinas, en telas para sábanas algunos pigmentos con el roce de las manos comienzan a transferirse, y también, hay muchos nombres nuevos de los que no pude deducir completamente su composición. Y hay olores nuevos que no puedo identificar.

Friends, I’m a little out of practice! These past few weeks have been rough—I haven’t been able to sit down and write and edit the way I like to here. Please be patient with me; I promise that in just a few posts, we’ll get back to that fluid, creative, coffee-break-with-friends vibe we all love so much while we chat about these mini adventures.

And it’s not just that I feel rusty when it comes to writing; I also felt that way while pre-selecting the fabric options that seemed best for this project. Several times I lost my bearings by focusing on completely unviable options, and I also constantly doubted which selections were most appropriate.

Whether it’s the material or the print, something has clearly changed in the quality of textiles on the market in my country; I notice a difference in the density of classic gabardine fabrics, and with some sheet fabrics, pigments start to transfer when I rub them with my hands. Plus, there are many new fabric names whose composition I couldn’t fully figure out. And there are new smells I can’t identify.

Lo que quiero decir es que hay cuestiones a considerar de las que antes nunca me hubiera preocupado. Y para aclarar solo por si acaso, no me estoy quejando o hablando negativamente de lo que vi ese día, mas bien quiero hacer resaltar 2 realidades de un mismo escenario.

La primera es la gran cantidad de nuevos nombres disponibles, nuevos tipos de telas, no solo en la variante de las populares elásticas deportivas que acá tienen altísima demanda, sino que hay telas que no veía hace mucho tiempo o de plano nunca había visto aquí, como tejidos gruesos para suéteres hechos de lana sintética con una trama bastante bonita, y también regresaron las telas con bordado en hilo, que una vez fueron increíblemente costosas, y hoy se exhiben a precios más que accesibles rondando los 11USD por metro.

La segunda, que es necesario antes de pedir el corte de la tela, examines bien qué estas comprando y pienses muy bien en su funcionalidad para lo que quieres hacer, no estés tan seguro de haber encontrado tu tela ideal hasta haber recorrido toda la tienda, o en su defecto todas las tiendas que puedas, y te lo digo de primera mano, donde casi invierto un aproximado de 20USD en 1 solo tipo de tela, y casi al final de mi recorrido encontré la tela perfecta por solo una fracción de ese costo.

What I mean is that there are issues to consider that I would never have worried about before. And just to be clear, I’m not complaining or speaking negatively about what I saw that day; rather, I want to highlight two different aspects of the same situation.

The first is the vast array of new brands available, new types of fabrics—not just the popular stretch sports fabrics that are in extremely high demand here, but also fabrics I haven’t seen in a long time or had never seen here at all, such as thick knits for sweaters made of synthetic wool with a rather beautiful weave, and fabrics with thread embroidery have also made a comeback; these were once incredibly expensive, but today they’re available at more than affordable prices, hovering around $11 per meter.

You should definitely stop to write down codes, names, and prices, and also take photos with your phone.

Second, before asking for the fabric to be cut, make sure to examine what you’re buying carefully and think very carefully about its functionality for what you want to make, Don’t be too sure you’ve found your ideal fabric until you’ve walked through the entire store—or, failing that, as many stores as you can—and I’m telling you this from firsthand experience: I almost spent about $20 on a single type of fabric, and near the end of my tour, I found the perfect fabric for just a fraction of that cost.
