"A Thousand Years" is a beautiful love song by Christina Perri, co-written with her producer David Hodges. It was composed specifically for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and released in 2011. The song captures the timeless feeling of waiting for the one you love and the overwhelming emotion of finally being with them. With its soft piano, emotional lyrics, and Perri’s heartfelt vocals, it is impossible not to love the song.
I first heard this song while watching the movie (though I watched it way after its actual release), and it instantly struck a chord with me. I found the song on Spotify and I’m pretty sure I had it on repeat for days. It was completely stuck in my head, and you could catch me humming it all the time.
There’s just something incredibly soothing about the melody and the words: “I have died every day waiting for you...” It felt like the kind of love you dream about—patient, deep, and all-consuming.
I even sang it during a get-together with my friends, and I was over the moon when they said it sounded amazing. Of course, I’m no professional and I sing simply because I love to. My vocal range can’t quite manage the high notes in this song, but I gave it my best anyway—and that made it all the more special.
A Thousand Years has stayed close to my heart ever since. It’s one of those songs that never gets old, no matter how many times you hear it. Every time it plays, it brings back that same warm, fuzzy feeling it did the very first time.
