While writing last week's Spooky Beersaturday post, I purposely edited out one of the beers because it really deserves the spotlight all to itself.
Some of you will know that I'm a big fan of can-art, so much so that I had a cupboard under the sink which, until about a week ago, was packed with dozens of empty cans. I'm an absolute sucker for a beer can with an eye-catching work of art and it's fair to say that on the odd occasion I've purchased a beer solely for the can rather than the content..."Sacrilege!" I hear you cry, and you're probably right. But do I care? Nope. And the reason why is because more often than not it is my gullible attraction to this gimmick that leads me to some fantastic tasting beers, some of which I would never have tried had it not been for the lure of the irresistible can-art.
The feature of this #beersaturday post is no exception, in fact, it actually goes one step further because for once I found out the interesting story as to why this particular beer has this particular design wrapped around it. Noinch!
Whether you're a fan of Jay and Silent Bob or not, this is a pretty fucking cool design. The only film I've ever seen them in is Dogma, which I thought was pretty funny, but still, they have never been a comedy duo I've paid much attention to. In fact, when this beer appeared in the fridge at my favourite Micro-pub I pretty much ignored it because of its low alcohol content. You see, I like a beer with some depth to its flavour, and with most beers under 6% all I taste is fizzy water. That's why I have a rule of "6 and above". Had it not been for the conversation I had with the barmaid, my rule of 6 would have prevented me from realising there actually are some sub-6% beers that pack-a-punch.
So, there I was, perusing the beers in the fridge and enquiring if there were any new hazy IPAs in stock when the barmaid asked if I'd tried the Totally Tapped, Noinch Noinch...
..."Nope, I like the can-art but I tend to go for the higher strength beers", I replied.
"You should give it a go, it's really "Noinch", said the barmaid with a cheeky grin, who then continued to tell me the reason why Jay & Silent Bob was on the side of the can, which until that moment was a point I'd never put much thought to (Although when you think about it, it is actually quite a random pairing. Beer and Silent Bob?). Anyway, the story went something like this...
...Some guy from Totally Tapped who obviously must be a big fan of Jay and Silent Bob, decided to contact Jay, or Bob, to ask if he could use their image on the label of this particular beer. Now, in my imagination, I picture this guy at the brewery tasting his new brew, and after taking a satisfying gulp he exclaimed "NOINCH!", which then led to the idea of using Jay and Silent Bob. Anyhoo, after Silent Bob received this request from some random beer monkey across the pond, he replied to say that he would only agree if he liked the beer...Can you imagine the pressure placed upon, not only, a fan but also upon a reputable brewer?!
As you could imagine, an unlabelled can was immediately sent by first class Royal Mail post to Mr. Bob, and upon tasting the beer Bob responded back to give his approval. Again, I imagine this reply came in the form of a one-word email that simply read, "Noinch".
And this is how Totally Tapped, my local brewery, came to become involved in the weirdest three-way since Han Solo met Luke and Princess Leia...
, What's the verdict?
Well, this beer was an absolute surprise and completely ruined the theory behind my rule of 6. Noinch Noinch presents itself with a gloriously frothy head, under which lays a pool of dense, hazy, and fruity DDH Pale ale. The taste lingers perfectly and balances itself like a ballerina against the alcohol. "More, give me more!", is all that's left to say.
No wonder Silent Bob gave his blessing to this beer. What a Beauty!
To close this post out, I'd just like to answer a question I received from . She recently asked how my can collection was going and I replied by telling her she would have to wait until this week's #beersaturday to find out. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I USED to have a large collection of beer cans under the sink until about a week ago. So where are they now..?
