Phew - what a ride! With its 7.2 % Vol of lcohol that was a tough one ...
The origins of bock beer lie in the former Hanseatic city of Einbeck in Lower Saxony. When the sons of Henry the Lion granted the city its charter in 1240, they also granted its citizens the right to brew beer. In order to achieve the necessary shelf life, beer with a higher alcohol content was brewed. To do this, it was mashed with an unusually high original wort content. The fermented result was a heavy, alcohol-rich beer.
The ducal court of the Wittelsbach family in Munich had been supplied from Einbeck since 1555 until 1573, when the first Bavarian court brewery was founded, initially at Trausnitz Castle in Landshut, and then moved to Munich in 1589 to brew its own beer. In 1614, master brewer Elias Pichler was poached from Einbeck to work at the Hofbräuhaus, where he continued to brew his "Ainpöckisch" beer in Munich. Over time, this became known as "Bockbier" in the Munich dialect. The word "Starkbier" is much younger, only coming into use in the 20th century.
So I did it - with "Engel Bock dunkel"
The beer
The beer, as written in its name, has quite a dark brown colour. Its Foam is very creamy and rather beige than white.
The taste
As you may expect from a Bockbier regarding the description it tastes rich and strong, slightly tangy but not too bitter. I really liked it! It brings a hidden sweetness that really makes you enjoy it at a cosy netflix evening besides a cracking fire. Although I of course had to add #icecubes it somehow gives you a warm, cosy feeling. Very nice!
Summary
Although I didn't like the other beers from that manufactory - that one really surprised me positively and I absolutely recommend it!
