The other day while at the Maltings Tap House with . I was scanning the bottle shelves and came across a couple of dusty bottles of a 14.1%ABV Bourbon barrel ages stout called Canadian Lunch.
Reading the lable my interest was aroused even further.
The ingredients includes coco nibs, peanut flour, maple syrup, vanilla and coconut. I was drooling already and working out a recipe in my head. Great for a beef and vegetable stew. With lots of root veggies and a few peppers. So I grabbed a couple of bottles and took them back to the bar.
After running them through the scanner the price popped up at close on £20 a bottle. Bloody Hell!! Maybe if I was not already well into my 4th pint of IPA they would have gone back on the shelf to gather more dust but they didn’t so here we are on Saturday cooking a Beef and Imperial Stout Stew.
First things first I did try a bit.
You can defiantly smell the Bourbon and taste the maple and vanilla. It is really smooth sipping drink and I could have easaly necked the whole bottle but I did get it for cooking. So some nice chunky bits of beef.
And a good amount of veggies and here is the result
I think the result is going to be spectacular. I’ll let you know.
So £20 a bottle too expensive ? It sort of depends. If I’m going to be honest one bottle would have probably worked fine for the cooking putting lots of flavours into the stew, and it not a session beer in any description. I think it would work in the same way you have an after dinner Liquor or glass of port who knows I might get a bottle in for a Christmas treat.
