The never ending search and yearning to visit most of South Africa's craft breweries continues. Recently, we stumbled upon the St. BeerYard Beer Garden in Stellenbosch , South Africa. I think they were previously called, or maybe they are still called, the Kennel Brewery.
The overarching theme of their beers are dog related, as I think the owner has a love for dogs. But I am not a 100% sure.
Sadly, like so many breweries on my journey so far, they did not have any bottles or cans. And shame on me for not having my beer growler with me!
Alas, the visit was still memorable with incredible decor and food that was really delicious.
So join me on this virtual journey to yet another craft brewery in South Africa! Without further ado...
Modern Decor Mixed with the Old
Out with the new in with the old. It seems like all the breweries I visit has picked up this trend in which they use vintage and old items to decorate the bar. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. The atmosphere was great, so I guess it worked for them!
We decided to sit in the back, where the kegs are kept and even more old things are stored. Old dart boards, canoes, musical instruments, and old artworks. It was something to experience. I think when they get busy, the atmosphere must be even better! Stellenbosch is known for its young student crowd, and I am sure they can pack this place to its max capacity. (I particularly like the artwork they made of the Afrikaans idiom, "Kom gesels 'n hond uit 'n bos." The literal translation is let us talk a dog out of a bush, which is interesting! I have no idea why it is what it is, but the meaning is let us talk nice and joyishly.)
The Beer
The beer was kind of a letdown. I only had a small sample size, because I needed to drive back home. I also thought that they might have some beers in bottles and in cans, but sadly they did not have any of them. I really need to invest in a growler, so that I can take beer home with me. But this is a relatively large investment, as most growlers are almost 2 liters, which means I need to buy four pints! Craft beer is not so cheap...
We also ordered a plate of chips or fries. And that was definitely the star of this place! Freshly fried with some homemade mayonnaise and other sauces, it was just perfect pub food to go with the very small beer that I had! I will definitely return and take my father with one time, as he loves a plate of chips/fries!
A Place for Good Times and Good Food
We visited the beer garden or pub early in the morning because we had another stop close by. So, we could not have all of the nice things on offer. They had some nice looking pizza ovens and a smoker or two. I am sure when you go there for a drink and pub lunch, you will be treated with something special!
Interestingly enough, just across from this brewery, there is another one, one that is more established and part of the foundation of Stellenbosch by now, Stellenbrau. But more on this one later...
Postscriptum, or Cheers!
For now, we enjoyed our visit there, and in the perfect summer weather, with the heat pelting down, a cold brew on tap was perfect, even if only a small taster!
Happy drinking, and safe travels.
All of the musings and writings are my own, albeit inspired by the (lack) of beer! The photographs are my own, taken with my Nikon D300.
P.S.S., hopefully they will have some bottles and cans when I return next time...
