Here I am for my first #Beersaturday post. A big thanks to for inviting me to try out this format!
I was dog sitting for some friends this past week and they paid me in cash and beer from their trip. Here are the three brews I was gifted (trying them for the first time). All three come from Picton, which is near Kingston, Ontario along Lake Ontario. There are also plenty of wineries in the area, known as Prince Edward County.
First up is the Cerveza Mexican Lager 4.5% from the 555 Picton Brewing Co.
When I poured this lager, I was amazed that it created basically zero foam. I even transferred it to another glass quickly and without taking the proper angle. A bit of foam materialized and quickly vanished. Perfect no spillage beer!
It's a light lager, not too much else to say. Maybe now's the time I admit that my beer palette is completely ruined from drinking exclusively strong IPAs. So... the Mexican Lager is the perfect beer for that rewatch of Breaking Bad that you should do once Better Call Saul ends later this year.
Second up is another one from the 555 crew in Picton: THE JUDGE - German Helles Lager 4.9%
Honestly very similar to the Mexican Lager except I like it more. Still light for my tastes but of course, a great session beer on warm summer nights. Maybe ideal for playing Wolfenstein or listening to Kraftwerk. It reminds me of my favourite German beer from university, the legendary 7% Holsten Maibock. Here's one of my first Instagram photos from 2015 (strangely prophetic of this post, no?):
We calculated that Maibock was the best value in terms of dollar/alcohol %. i.e. we drank it a lot during university. I was a philosophy grad student at the time, hence the book.
Third is the Westy Pale Ale 5.7% from Parsons Brewing Company in Picton.
Now we're talking! This strong beer hits the spot for me. Darker colour and very flavourful. This is one I'll keep my eyes out for in the future.
So I guess that's it for now. I don't quite grasp the BEER token game yet but it seems like there's a lot more I have to learn about this. For now, happy #Beersaturday!
