Even though I’ve heard some rumours about Saint Patrick’s green beer, it still remains an Easter thing (as we call Maundy Thursday Green Thursday in Czech). Green lagers are usually available for about two weeks only. Hence the one I had last Saturday in Zdroj brewery in Poděbrady was most likely the last one this year. It was worth it, though. Just like all the good crafted green beers, even this one is dyed by nettles. It is very smooth and the nettles aren't really noticable.
I když jsem zaslechl zvěsti o zeleném pivu na irský svátek svatého Patrika, zelené pivo je stále doménou Velikonoc a Zeleného čtvrtku. Obvykle je na čepu tak týden, dva. Takže zelené pivo, které jsem pil v sobotu v poděbradském pivovaru Zdroj, bylo pravděpodobně letos poslední. A stálo za to. Stejně jako jiná poctivá zelená piva, i tohle je obarvené kopřivami.
Poděbrady is a spa town about 50 kilometres east of Prague on the river Elbe (Labe). Besides of mineral water springs and a marvellous colonnade, it is mentionable for a large chateau, a hydroelectric power plant from the 1910’s, well-know Easter markets and, of course, a craft brewery that was originally founded in 1502. It survived three large fires and was shut down soon after the communist coup d'état in 1948. The building then served as a granary (or potato warehouse) and the yard as a mechanic store, both undermaintained so badly that in the late 90’s the building was meant to be torn down.
Poděbrady leží na břehu Labe asi 50 kilometrů východně od Prahy. Kromě minerálních pramenů a malebné kolonády stojí za zmínku velký zámek, více než sto let stará vodní elektrárna, známé velikonoční trhy a, samozřejmě, řemeslný pivovar. Ten byl založen v roce 1502 a přežil tři velké požáry, ale ne komunistický převrat. Krátce po něm byl zrušen, budova sloužila jako sklad brambor a na dvoře byla autodílna. Celý areál byl mizerně udržován a na konci devadesátých let hrozila pivovaru demolice.
The brewery was saved two weeks before the planned demolition by a local real estate agent that originally meant to repair and sell or rent it as a very lucrative property at the river bank. However, as the time went, he opened a beer restaurant (without having the reopened brewery yet), rented the first floor of the former ice storage to someone who runs a beer spa there and tried to brew few batches of beer in Hubertus brewery in Kácov. Once the real estate agent realized that he can actually brew beer himself, he finally decided to reopen the brewery. If I am not mistaken, that was in 2017.
Dva týdny před plánovanou demolicí pivovaru koupil celý areál místní realitní makléř, která chtěl lukrativní nemovitost na břehu Labe opravit a prodat nebo pronajmout. Ale jak šel čas, nejprve otevřel pivovarskou restauraci (aniž by se tu vařilo pivo), pronajal první patro bývalé ledárny provozovateli pivních lázní a pak vyzkoušel na vlastní triko uvařit několik várek v kácovském pivovaru Hubertus. Teprve když si nový majitel ověřil, že pivo uvařit svede, konečně se rozhoupal pivovar obnovit. To bylo, nepletu-li se, v roce 2017.
The fermentation vessel above is just a mere decoration. However, I run into a flyer adverting brewery tours in the restaurant bathroom. I called the number and to my surprise, I was told that we could have a tour once we finish the beers we had ordered. For only CZK 200 (EUR 8, USD 9), you can taste all the beers that are being brewed and see where all the magic is done!
Fermentační nádoba výše je jen dekorace. Ale když jsem si šel odskočit, narazil jsem na leták nabízející prohlídku pivovaru. Zavolal jsem na uvedené číslo a k mému překvapení byla prohlídka možná okamžitě, jen co si s T. dopijeme pivo. Za dvě stovky máte možnost ochutnat všechno, co Zdroj zrovna vaří, a taky zjistit, jak to v takovém pivovaru chodí.
Here are the real tanks and vessels. The one with a tub of foam is full of dark lager, the other ones contain light beers, both lagers and ales.
Všechny tyhle tanky už jsou v provozu. V nádobě s neckami plnými pěny je tmavý ležák, ve všech ostatních jsou spodně i svrchně kvašená světlá piva.
The signs tell everything you need to know. The ale here, for instance, was brewed in two batches on March 22 and 23. It would be a “dvanáctka” having EPM 12. The other digits stand for temperature, kinds of hops and so.
Na cedulích je všechno, co o pivu potřebujete vědět. Ale v téhle kádi byl vařen nadvakrát 22. a 23. března. Pokud jde o stupňovitost, bude to dvanáctka. Další čísla jsou teplota v různých fázích vaření, druhy chmele a podobně.
