Imagine Nutella and Guinness got caught having a scandalous affair, and their bastard offspring was sold on grocery store shelves. This is one magnificent bastard! Meet Chocolate Hazelnut Death from Iron Horse Brewery.
I reviewed their original Quilter's Irish Death way back in 2017! I still buy it on occasion, too.
7.3% ABV and balanced malty sweetness make this new twist on that beer. It a strong brew, although it has slightly less alcohol than the original. The blurb says there is chocolate, hazelnut, and a hint of orange peel. I'm not really getting more than the subtlest of citrus notes, because this is strong chocolate and the hazelnut is definitely there.
I'm not sure this flavor combination really belongs in a beer, but it works a lot better than the chocolate hazelnut OREO cookies I also recently tried. For both this beer and OREO cookies, the original does the job just fine, and any embellishment seems to detract from it instead of adding something it lacked.
Give it a try though and decide for yourself if you ever run across it on the shelves of your local grocer or if your specialty beer store has it on hand!
