I haven't been drinking much as of late. I bought a new batch of beers but they have been sitting in my fridge for quite a while now. Luckily I didn't buy too many. The last few beers that I've had have left a bad taste in my mouth afterwards. Literally. I'm guessing that I left them too long and they went stale on me. Some of these beers are new ones that I haven't tried and some are revisits that I enjoyed previously. With the nicer weather starting to come around a little more I've been wanting to have a drink again. There's really nothing like a beer on a sunny day is there? For this #Beersaturday I will be reviewing a new coffee stout that ive never tried before. Let's see how it faired.
Cold Current Coffee Stout
Brewery: Couchiching Craft Brewing Co
Origin: Mississauga ON Canada
Style: Coffee Stout
Abv: 4.0%
IBU: Unknown
SRM: Unknown
Marketing: The can has a white and navy blue color scheme with a brown plaid banner at the top and bottom. Thwre is a flock of seagulls design image on front and a short blurb on the back that describes some of the tasting notes.
The brewery put a Canadian Flag on the front as well which is a new marketing trend in Canada because of the whole trade war nonsense that started in early 2025 and continues on to today. Overall the marketing is okay but nothing special in my opinion, it just fine.
Color: The beer poured a solid black color with no light coming through.
The frothy head of foam on top was a mocha color. The head lasted a while and left a nice lacing on the glass.
Nose: The aroma was quite strong with a lot of roasted notes and a very distinct smell of coffee, which makes sense given that there is added coffee in the brew. I also got a very subtle note of vanilla in the background.
Taste: Very light sweetness upfront and a little tanginess. The finish is strong and bitter. Not balanced, and definitely airing on the side of bitter. Roasted flavors with more coffee. Pleasant taste overall.
Texture: Tiny angry bubbles add a sharpeness to the mouth feel. There was a silkiness underneath the carbonation. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel.
Impression: Overall I liked the beer. It was bitter but not unpleasantly so. Coffee goes well with stout beers because they both have a roasted quality to them that works well together. I liked the coffee taste myself. It wasn't overdone and it tasted real, not like a fake extract or anything like that, which I personally hate. Overall a good coffee flavored stout for me. I'd probably buy this again on occasion.
Oast House Brewery
We recently visited the Oast House Brewery in Niagara on the Lake. I've had a few of their beers before but it was my first time visiting the brewery. We went there for a family event and ate pizza and wings and drank a few beers.
We sat up in the loft area overlooking a vineyard out back. It looks like it would be a really nice view in late spring and summer when everything g is lush and green.
Most people had their barn raiser beer and I of course had their porter. Both are very good, especially when they are direct from the brewery and super fresh.
