A while ago we went to Bruges in Belgium with my family. Bruges is famous for, amongst many other things - beer.
While most of us went sightseeing, hubby and my brother in law, ie his whiskey drinking buddy went to explore some of Bruges famous drink. They wanted to find a good pub that offered a wide range of good local beers rather than a distillery that restricts you to their own product. We were in town for a few hours only and most places didn't open till late afternoon. Luckily they found an old pub in the middle of the city center, just behind the famous Belfort, called De Garre https://degarre.be/. Given its location, they were worried that it might be a bit touristy. Google described it as a "quaint, quirky pub with many local beers" and the reviews were good. They decided to go anyway, and boy, were they a couple of happy lads afterwards.
I asked hubby to take some photos of the pub for me in case I was going to write about it, and this is all he got me. Bloody hopeless!!! He said the De Garre is located in an old quirky building and it was difficult to take photos.
The guys had three different beers and both agreed the one brewed by De Garre was by far one of the best beer they'd ever drunk.
It was so good that they bought half a dozen back to share between them. They would have bought more if they could lug it all the way back to UK!!!
The de garre is a tripel at 11%, I'm told that's pretty high for a beer. Even from inside the bottle, you can see it's got a nice golden colour.
The most unusual thing about the beer it's big head (is that how you describe it?). It practically oozed out when we opened the bottle, and the bubbles kept on popping but didn't splash all over the place like a bottle of champagne.
I had a sip of the beer, and I can understand why the guys liked it so much. It was really nice!!! I can't describe the taste, in fact I can't really remember it now as I only had one small sip, but my first impression was very good. Hubby only had three bottles, so I thought I'd let him savour it instead. But trust me, it was very nice, definitely something that I would order in the pub.!!!
The packaging is really stylish, and modern, gold on black. I think the logo looks like a monastery, perhaps it's a nod to the origins of Belgian beer, but with a modern twist. If we ever go back to Bruges again, I have a feeling hubby will want to drop by again.
