challenged me to respond to #beersaturday, so this post is my response. How well I do is another matter.
There are regular drinkers. Then there are "social drinkers," people who drink only occasionally and in social situations. I don't drink often enough to be called a social drinker; if I drink 4 times a year that's a lot. Maybe this makes me an anti-social drinker? That's what I tell people, and that's the story I'm sticking with!
I won't say I never drink, but drinking isn't my thing. In recent years I found my go-to beverage: hard cider. I can drink a bottle of hard cider in seconds, and the buzz kicks in immediately. While I don't mind the buzz, what do I do for the next few hours? Whatever I end up doing, I'll go broke. So I stop.
Since the challenge is about beer, here are my comments on 3 beers: the good, the "bad", and the ugly. "Bad" here just means "not as good".
The Good: Red Stripe
The sweet tooth rules me. Red Stripe is Jamaican beer sweetened with a bit of honey. It's been some years since I last had some, but that's how I recall Red Stripe.
It was good enough that in 2012 I had bought a 6-pack in while in Connecticut after few weeks of work to bring back to New Jersey where I had been living at the time; in between was New York City and neighboring Westchester County, New York just north of NYC. I'm sure I've had Red Stripe a few more times after that, but not since 2014.
Whether I drink Red Stripe again or not, I can highly recommend it.
The "Not as Good": Presidente, Heiniken, Dos Equis
Presidente beer, the leading beer from the Dominican Republic, isn't a bad beer. In many ways, it's like beers such as Heiniken and Dos Equis ("XX").
I'm OK drinking Presidente beer, so I can't call it "bad"; it's more like a regular beer, which means it doesn't rule my sweet tooth like Red Stripe. Although I've had Heiniken beer many times over the years, I can't recall the last time I had a Presidente (or even Heiniken). As long as I have access to lime, I'm good with these beers.
Last time I had XX was in 2014 when I was on vacation in Upstate New York having a steak meal for lunch at a sports bar while watching FIFA World Cup matches in Brazil or Wimbledon Tennis.
The Ugly: IPA (India Pale Ale)
For many years I had heard about IPA. I wondered what the big deal was, but I never had a reason to try one. One day, while visiting a cousin in North Carolina, I saw he had a few cans of IPA. After asking for permission to drink one, I had my first IPA.
It was also my last IPA.
IPA is a classification called India Pale Ale. It's a beer that's very heavy on hops, and originally it needed to be: it was made to survive the ocean voyage from Europe to India or from India to Europe. I'm guessing that by the time the voyage was over that the beer would taste more like a normal beer.
After feeling the bitter beer face expression long after it crossed my face, I poured the rest of the IPA into the soil of a plant base.
Should I have given it to the dog? That would have been cruel. Should I have offered it to someone else? I tasted it straight from the can, so it was too late. So it was the plant.
IPAs have their fanatics, but they aren't for everyone. They definitely aren't for me.
Just My Two Sats
I don't always have a drink; but when I do, I drink hard cider. I don't drink often enough to qualify as a social drinker, but hard cider is my go-to drink.
When it comes to beer, I don't have a go-to beer. Instead, I know which ones I handle better than others. Red Stripe is one of my favorites. Other beers I can handle are in the class of Heiniken, Presidente, and Dos Equis. Due to Bitter Beer Face, my stay-away beer is IPA.
