My hometown football team, The Buffalo Bills made it to the last game before the Super Bowl. Beat by the Kansas City Chiefs all the hopes and dreams of having a super bowl team were crushed! We're proud of our boys! They did great. First time in 25 years or more that we were even a contender. Congratulations KC fans, and thank you Buffalo Bills for an incredible season.
OK, what does this have to do with #BeerSaturday? Everything actually. As any sports fan knows, beer and football goes together like Peanut Butter and Jelly! Picking the perfect beer for the game is as important as the game itself. When I realized the name of the beer I had selected for the last game before the Super Bowl, I had to do a last minute change.
My first choice was a Game of Thrones - My Watch Has Ended beer. I liked the way the bottle looked, I'm a huge Game of Thrones nerd and it was priced a little higher than what I'd normally buy. Had I seen the label, "My Watch Has Ended" I probably wouldn't of selected this one. Seemed like a bad omen for the team that hadn't been to the Super Bowl in over 25 years. Yes, "My Watch Has Ended" seemed much more fitting for the Super Bowl. I should of known my team would lose after this beer selection 🤣
So being superstitious and wanting to remedy this bad mojo I had brought into the house, I ran back to the beer store and discoverd, "Genesee Spring Bock" was back in season. This is a seasonal specialty only available for a month or two. For me this also indicates, spring is just around the corner..... Oh how I long for warmer weather and a nice long ride on the motorcycle!
I've written about Spring Bock before. The Genesee beer specialty lines are actually fantastic and affordably priced. Genesee is a local beer and known as a lower end beer at that. Their specialty beers however, are fantastic in my humble opinion.
This is a bock beer. It has a nice amber color. It's very smooth, not bitter and has a very well rounded full flavor. As many of you know from my other BeerSaturday posts, I'm a bit more partial to dark beers, and stouts. This beer reminds me of a well rounded lager as far as taste. I'm not a huge beer nerd though, I buy beer, I open beer, I drink beer. Beer either tastes good or not. This beer tastes good 🤣 I enjoyed it very much.
Considering this was the last game before the super bowl, we prepared a huge meal for the occasion. This beer paired really well with The Dood's homemade pot roast.
So the Buffalo Bills lost the game. I don't know if my selection of beer jinxed the team or if maybe it was some sort of harbinger of what was to come. My hometown teams "Watch Has Ended". My original "Game of Thrones" beer sit in the fridge next to the pickles. I'll be reviewing these next week after I enjoy them watching the Super Bowl this weekend.
So the bad news is, my team didn't make the Super Bowl. The good news is when Genesee Spring Bock hits the shelf, winter is almost over. My first Spring Bock sighting always fills my heart with joy knowing that soon I'll be sitting under the warm sun and taking long rides on the motorcycle again.
As for the Game of Thrones - My Watch Has Ended beer. I'll be enjoying them as I cheer on the Kansas City Chiefs. Not a popular choice in these parts, most of the locals are holding a grudge for the beating they gave us. I've been a huge KC fan since the Nigerian Nightmare days of Christian Okoye. It's great seeing them take the Super Bowl again and that Mahomes is fun to watch!
So till next week. I'll let you know how the Game of Thrones beer paired with the Super Bowl festivities! Let's go KC and good luck to Tampa Bay in the big game. May the best team win.
