It's been raining in Manila!
As a child, heavy rains may mean two things; cancellation of classes if it's too heavy to go to school, or finally being able to use my Powerpuff Girls raincoat and flex it to my classmates. Of course, cancellation of classes thrills me more than using mg PPG raincoat!
Cancellation of classes means I would get to watch my favorite TV shows without looking up at the clock from time to time. Oh what a joy to just watch Doraemon, Powerpuff Girls (obviously), Sugar Sugar Rune, and many more! I could go on and make an entire list of TV shows that I would love to watch at home when classes are suspended.
Most of the time, rain falls heavier in the afternoon. Now, this is the perfect time for me to ask (beg, actually) my mom to allow me play in the rain with my friends. I will never forget the first time she allowed me to. It was actually my preschool teacher who told her that it's fine for kids like me to play in the rain. I never felt so happy!!! Hearing an adult say that made me feel very heard!
From then on, my mom would allow me to play in the rain with my friends as long as I wouldn't roam too far from our house. Oh what a joy! My friends and I would play patintero, agawang base, bamsak and a lot more. Sometimes, we would even ride our bikes and just laugh about the fact that we're getting lots of flood splashes on the back of our shirts. Good times, right?
Craziest playing-in-the-rain memory I have though is when I REGRETTED not realizing this AMAZING idea I had. You see, in our neighborhood there's this alleyway that gets flooded the most when it rains. I regretted that I haven't thought of SWIMMING!!! in those murky waters when the flood hadn't subsided yet! In my 6 or 7-year-old mind, flood waters is like free beach out on our street! Sayaaang! Bakit ngayon ko lang naisip?! As proactive as I was at a very young age, I invited the only friend I have left with me that morning (most of them went home when the rain weakened) to lay on our bellies in the water and make this water stroke movements with our arms as if we're really swimming! Ewww!!! 😖🤢
Eventually my mom found us and I received a very good pinching all over me. How she found out that we were swimming there is still a mystery to me. Maybe moms are really programmed to sense it whenever their child is performing crazy ideas. I had to behave for a good amount of time before she allowed me to play in the rain again LOL
Now that I'm grown, heavy rains mean possible slower internet connection, heavy traffic, hence, the hellish commute around the metro. It could also mean that I would have a hard time drying my laundry let alone being able to wash it. Don't get me wrong, as an adult, there's still so much about the rain that I love so much but my worries were inexistent when I was young.
When I was young, all I have to think about is making the most out of every rainy day. Now that I'm grown, when I don't let my worries bother me, all I can reminisce about is how amazing those old rainy days are, and how pure my innocence was.
