In a busy city, like Makati, it’s important to know the different means of transportation so you can cope with traffic congestion. You can use a private car, yes, but you can also use public transportations like the Metro Rail Transit (MRT), bus, jeepney, cab, or even tricycle.
There are various ways on how I get to work, but I prefer riding tricycles even if it’s somehow pricey for other commuters. It costs me Php 50 or $0.89 for a special, one way ride, it means the driver will treat you special, and the driver will talk to you nonstop about everything under the sun! Lol, kidding aside, it means I no longer have to wait for other passengers to arrive before the tricycle to go. Thanks to this special treatment, I can reach my workplace in due time and other places without getting late. Aside from that, the tricycle lane is just a few steps away from our house, that’s why riding on a tricycle is beneficial for me. Another advantage is that I don’t have to stand in line to get on a vehicle, tricycle drivers here have the initiative to ask you where you are going even if you’re just trying to exercise in the morning by walking.
Grab car is usually my thing as a city girl, it transports me to places comfortably, unlike when I ride a jeepney or tricycle but riding a tricycle is one of the modes of transportation that is dear to my heart for some reasons.
First of all, my partner and I had a lot of special moments while riding a tricycle. We had our private fun car moments, but it’s a different story with tricycles. My partner, Wil, used to arrive at school late when we were both in high school. When Wil and I started dating, things started to change. Wil would pick me up at home at 5 o'clock in the morning so we could ride a tricycle to school together since, as opposed to my partner at the time, I always arrived at school early. This memory, together with the fragrance of the Bench perfume we once wore, came to mind every time we ride a tricycle. Oh, good old days!
Second, whenever I ride a tricycle, I remember myself and my high school classmates. When I was in grade school and high school, going to school was easy because of our location. Majority of my classmates had tricycles as their school service. Every time I see my friends riding a tricycle after school, I feel envious. Tricycles can accommodate four up to six passengers but my friends’ tricycle service accommodates nine students including their bags. Once, a student from their service was absent, since they knew I’m interested in trying a tricycle service, they asked me to join their service even though it would not take me to our house lol. Of course, I asked my parents’ permission so I could go to my friend’s house and they put their trust in me. I was interested to experience riding in the back of the tricycle, where people often load their goods and belongings. By the way, the design of the tricycles here are not the back-to-back ones, it’s just like a motorbike with additional seats on the side. The back of the tricycle is designed intended to hold goods and other stuff, no one is permitted to sit there since there is no cushion but since I'm petite, they allowed me. The result? The ride was challenging because we encountered uneven roads but it was fun! Imagine the agony my butt endured on a rocky road!
Last but not the least, I enjoy having a tricycle ride with my sisters. We use a car whenever we go grocery shopping or have a meal at the nearest mall. Oftentimes, my two younger sisters would often object and volunteer to commute even the inconvenience caused by the heavy traffic. For me, riding a car is more comfortable but for them, it’s stressful because they feel nauseous every time the car stops. Since we have boxes of groceries to bring at home, I usually let my parents take the car and I’d go with my two younger sisters even if it’s not that comfortable for me. Despite the traffic and hassle of commuting, I am always thrilled to see them happy on our way home. Ahh, the things I do for them!
While typing these things, I wondered why I hadn't taken the time to reflect how much I value public transportation such as tricycles. Because it has become a part of my routine, I oftentimes fail to appreciate the beauty of things.Because of this, I looked for pictures of me in a tricycle or pictures I had taken in a tricycle but there were just a few. In the future, I’d love to savor the memorable moments by capturing more pictures, or perhaps videos of me and the people I cherish as we go over the bumpy yet fun road of life using the transportations that would make it all possible.
