When I knew I would be going to Pampanga this year, I spent considerable time researching the nearest attractions. Trekking to Mt. Pinatubo came up in my searches. The volcano is not near, but the opportunity was too rare to let pass. I asked my previous boss to go with me on this adventure. I'll spare you the details. I'll write more about this amazing experience in a future blog.
The whole journey to the crater of the active volcano included a very early morning 4x4 ride to the starting point of the trek. The bumpy ride lasted for almost an hour. Then, we went on a rain-soaking trek for two hours. The sun had shown when we arrived at the crater, and we saw its full glory. The experience was surreal, and I couldn't imagine the destruction the volcano had caused when it erupted three decades ago.
I consider myself really lucky to be able to enjoy the sight of the volcano with a sense of safety and awe. I will definitely return when I get the chance.
