Cebu has always been a strong and lively city full of people, stories, and smiles. But everything changed when Typhoon Tino struck. It was one of the strongest storms to ever hit the city, with Signal No. 4 raised in many areas. The wind was roaring, and the rain didn’t stop for hours. What used to be busy roads and peaceful homes turned into deep waters and fallen debris. It was a heartbreaking sight for everyone who called Cebu their home.
The typhoon came so suddenly and with so much force. Late at night, people could already hear the strong winds hitting their roofs, breaking windows, and shaking the walls. Power lines went down, and the city was left in total darkness. Many families huddled together in fear, praying that their houses would not collapse. The sound of the wind was so loud, it felt like the whole world was shaking.
By morning, floodwaters had already reached the second floors of many houses. Streets were no longer visible they looked like rivers. Cars floated and piled up in the middle of the road. Some people had to climb to their rooftops just to stay safe from the rising water. It was a scene that felt like something out of a nightmare.
Rescue teams tried their best to help, but the strong current made it hard to reach some areas. Many people were trapped inside their homes, waving for help from windows or rooftops. Others had to swim through dirty floodwater just to find safety. Families were separated, and pets were left behind as people tried to save themselves. It was truly painful to see so many lives turned upside down overnight.
The storm also caused landslides in nearby mountain areas. Trees were uprooted, and roads were blocked by rocks and mud. Many places became completely unreachable. Even hospitals were flooded, making it hard for doctors and nurses to care for those who were injured or sick. Some people lost everything their homes, their cars, and even their loved ones.
After the storm passed, Cebu looked like a different city. The streets were full of mud, broken glass, and debris. Cars were stacked on top of each other, and electric posts lay on the ground. The smell of floodwater and garbage filled the air. Many people walked through the wreckage, trying to find what was left of their belongings. Others cried as they looked at their ruined homes.
Despite all the destruction, what stood out most was the spirit of the people. Neighbors helped each other, sharing food and clean water. Volunteers came out to give relief goods to those who lost everything. Some opened their homes to strangers who needed a place to stay. Even in such a dark time, Cebu’s heart was still strong.
Still, the city needs a lot of help. There are thousands of families without homes, no electricity, and very little clean water. Children are getting sick from the cold and the floods. Many people are hungry, and the roads are still hard to pass. It will take time and effort for Cebu to rise again, but help from others can make a big difference.
Now is the time for everyone to come together not just those in Cebu, but people from other places too. Every little act of kindness counts. Donating food, clothes, water, or even small amounts of money can help a family survive another day. The people of Cebu are strong, but they need our support to stand again.
We also need to keep praying. Prayers give strength to those who are tired and in pain. Prayers give hope to those who feel lost. Cebu may be broken right now, but it will never lose its courage and faith. With everyone’s help and with God’s guidance, the city will recover.
As I look at the photos and videos of the damage, my heart feels heavy. The sight of flooded streets, houses under water, and cars piled up is hard to accept. But even in the middle of this sadness, there is a light the kindness of people who care. Seeing strangers help each other reminds me that no storm can ever wash away the human spirit.
To all those who lost their homes and loved ones, may you find comfort and strength. To the rescuers, volunteers, and everyone helping out, thank you for your bravery. To those who are safe and able, let’s continue to spread awareness and find ways to help. Cebu needs us now more than ever.
This disaster has shown that life can change in just one night. But it also shows that when people come together, hope always finds a way to rise just like the sun after a storm. Cebu will rebuild. It will heal. And one day, its people will look back and say, “We made it through”
For now, let us all say a prayer for the victims, for the rescuers, for the families still waiting for help. Pray for strength, for peace, and for better days ahead.
Pray for Cebu.
