Greetings Hive Philippines, Asean Hive, and all other communities here in Hive! Before anything else, let me greet you...
That is "Merry Christmas to everyone!"
Every Christmas season, we see various symbols of Christmas such as the Christmas tree adorned with colorful and shiny ornaments and blinking lights. The blinking colored lights also known as Christmas lights also hang in and out of the houses. Two prominent Christmas symbols are Santa Claus and the Nativity Scene, which depicts the birth of Jesus in a manger.
Over the years, however, especially in the last decade or so, I have observed some changes. I'm not sure if you have observed this when you went to the malls and other stores to buy your Christmas decorations. You can buy a lot of Christmas lights, but the boxes now say "Holiday lights". A lot of shiny balls and other glittering decor. You can buy a Christmas tree with varying sizes (and prices). You can even buy the star that you put on top of the tree. (I wonder who made that up?)
Christmas trees in our school yard.
However, have you noticed that you can hardly buy a Belen or Nativity scene? Frankly speaking, in the last few years, I hardly see a nativity scene for sale in our local stores.
Even in malls, and even in the so-called "Christmas Villages", I hardly see the nativity. However, you will surely see a figure of a jolly, white-bearded man dressed in red and white in every mall. Sometimes, even portrayed by a live person. Yes, I do mean Santa Claus.
It seems that over the years, during Christmas, people are more focused on Santa Claus and his bag full of gifts. The Children's young minds are often conditioned to believe and focus more on Santa Claus. They excitedly waited for what gifts they would receive from Santa and their Ninongs and Ninangs (Godfathers and God Mothers) .
That brings me to the question?
Sino ang tunay na Star ng Pasko?
Who is the real Star of Christmas?
Not that Santa Claus is a mere fragment of imagination, there was once a Bishop of the early church named St. Nicholas who lived around 300 A.D. and was said to be the protector of children and sailors.
Surely we love the idea of giving gifts during Christmas, but was he the real reason for Christmas?
Trivia Questions:
- The Catholic Church also celebrates the day of St. Nicholas in December, do you know what day is it?
- Do you know that the image of Sta Claus of a fat white-bearded man in a red and white suit was made popular by a soft drink company for their Christmas advertisement? Do you know that company and what year was that?
- Did you know that the early Christians did not celebrate Christmas? What was the earliest recorded date that Christmas was celebrated?
The Meaning of Christmas
Although Christmas is now also a secular holiday, celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike, for us Christians let's remember the true reason we are celebrating Christmas...
The birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. According to Britanica, the term Christmas means "mass on Christ’s Day”
So if asked, who is the real star of Christmas? I will answer it with this video.
Again Merry Christmas!
