Since it was Tuesday, we did not have many patients, so the whole morning was quite chill. We also taught one of our groupmates from the laboratory how to properly take a patient’s blood pressure since they will be the ones to replace us in the OPD in the next few days.
However, we experienced a very panicking situation. One patient suddenly felt very stiff and complained that she was very cold. She was already in a wheelchair. She showed signs of possible hypothermia, especially since the weather was also very cold and rainy at that time. We started to panic because the BP machine was not working. We later found out that the outlet in the pharmacy was broken. Because of that, we decided to take the patients’ blood pressure inside instead.
We were told to move inside the RHU because it was difficult to take the patients’ height, weight, and temperature outside, then go inside again just to check their blood pressure. When we finally went inside, I felt excited and nervous at the same time because the nurses and doctors were there. I kept thinking, “What if I make a mistake while getting a patient’s blood pressure?”
I asked one of my classmates to teach me how to use the RHU’s retractable height measuring tape. He taught me well, and I found it easy to use. The measurements were accurate, although sometimes a person’s height increases a little depending on how they stand.
Later on, the OJT kuyas at the RHU gave us some OS to work on. Elizabeth and I were excited because we already had knowledge about making them. We also helped teach our groupmates in the OPD how to do it.
All in all, my last day in OPD was a really great experience. Honestly, OPD is my favorite station so far, even though I have not tried the other stations yet. I did not want to rotate because I really enjoy interacting with different patients and taking their vital signs.
