Before we expound on why this is my favorite word. Let's talk about its etymology. Naks may pa lesson na ngayon
The Philippines was a colony of Spain back then and for almost 300 years people residing in the country learned how to speak a little Spanish. Some words were also used, by friars each time that they are conducting their masses to the public.
Jusme! was derived from the Spanish words Dios Mio! or in English My God! Or in some translations Oh My God! Just like OMG to some people.
Now as time progresses, Spanish words are being forgotten by the new generation. I remember someone having a hard time figuring out what is dos mil bente or when asking for a fare in a jeepney and the driver will respond that the fare is disiotso.
Since words are evolving and with the introduction of text generation people now use shortened words in their messages. jusme and disomio sounds like right?
So that is where it came from.
Now why did it become my favorite phrase then? Nothing to sound as religious and all. I just acquired it from someone whom I do not recall.
I use this term to express an exclamation to something. At times, I use it as a filler to my sentence or if I really don't have anything to say. There are also instances where I use this as a gauge if I am getting into a heated conversation with someone.
jusme
jusmio
potek
jusme for the light stuff, jusmio if things get serious, and potek if I am getting angry or disappointed. Potek is the closes that I can use to the F word so yeah personal restrictions.
Going back to the jusme I just find it fun to use most of the time and people can still somehow understand what it means even though the context and the original meaning don't match. It is an expression that is for sure!
This is another verbal diarrhea from me. It is a spam post but hopefully, you learned something new from me. So the next time that we encounter each other and I use the phrase you now know what it means to me.
