First of all, thank you for creating this community so we can share and enjoy our art!
This is a fractal hot off the presses -- my Sunday afternoon work in a program called Apophysis! For those unfamiliar with fractal art, it is based around the principles of fractal geometry, the geometry of life itself.
The patterns that we see in Creation -- the leaves and branches on every plant, the petals on every flower, are very similar, but not one is exactly the same -- they are self-similar, with units (or "fractions") of specific items at all scales deeply resembling one another. The math that runs this amazing process in Creation -- the ability to form the correct shapes over and over again in nature while not truly copying any particular shape -- is fractal geometry.
In art, making use of fractal geometry is by the iteration -- self-similar repetition -- of the basic things we get in all geometry: lines and curves and angles, all within a "canvas" of a particular shape. What fascinates me the most is finding patterns that create images similar to life as we know it and life as we COULD know it if we could actually hop a starship to other worlds ... or, mess the genetic codes up enough here to alter the iteration patterns in Creation.
This piece here is the first of two renderings of one fractal made in Apophysis that is reminiscent of a floral shape -- most similar in color and shape to a camellia, and instead of shining in the sun, it has become a star itself... true to the nature of work in fractal geometry, it is hard to make an EXACT copy of anything, but I go for beautifully suggestive!
If anyone around here does crafts and such, I would love to see this design on a broach, a pin, a pendant ...
