It was only earlier this year when I learned about the word "Manhwa" when an online friend mentioned it while suggesting some Korean Dramas. Manhwa is what they call Korean comics. I'm surprised it sounded similar with "Manga", thr Japanese comics.
Then about three weeks ago, the DTIYS art challenge we had on ArtPark was to draw a Manwha character named Sung Jin-Woo of Solo Leveling.
Sung Jin-Woo
Sung Jin-Woo is the main character of the manhwa Solo Leveling. His journey begins from being a weak hunter and reaching the title of being the strongest hunter in the world for his family. I didn't attempt to read the manga since it has hundreds of chapters and I no longer have enough time to read and make it to the deadline so what I did was to just search for fan arts online instead as to have a clue of what Sung Jin-Woo looks like.
Based from the fan arts and description about him, Sung Jin-Woo is a handsome and cool character with muscular built, gray eyes which turns to bright purple whenever he uses his abilities. This prompted me to draw him looking cool as well.
Although if there's one thing I love on this artwork, it will definitely be the lips. I'm glad I was able to bring out the lip color I want and also got satisfied with the shading.
Drawing Process
Getting the body position I have in my head was kind of difficult to sketch so I tried using the 3D Model figure which is available on Clip Studio Paint. I'm glad it's also accessible on the Debut version. This was my first time trying the 3D model and adjusting the position of the model was challenging for a newbie like me.
I was wishing to draw Sung Jin-Woo in action though I wasn't still able to create that position with the 3D model, so I just settled for this one. What's nice about using 3D model is that it helps or guides you draw human bodies especially when you are not yet that good in drawing the human anatomy and in different angles.
Certainly, using a model had shorten my sketching time and I like it a lot because I was able to draw a decent-looking hand. Will I use a 3D model next time? Of course! But only when I feel like using it and really need it.
Going to the colors, I used the Glow and Add Glow blending mode for the purple glow on his eyes and streaks off light around him, even though some parts already looked almost white. Lol. I have to learn how to do a glow while still maintaining its color.
Here's a timelapse video of drawing Sung Jin-Woo. I recently began a new series on my Youtube channel called "Watch Me WIP" or "WMW" where I upload the timelapse of my drawing. Actually, I've been doing my "Watch Me WIP" videos way back 2016 when I was still on a different blogging platform. Now that my CSP has a timelapse feature, I thought of bringing back my drawing videos.
