Si hablamos de jugadores colombianos sin duda se nos viene a la mente muchos nombres de esta nueva generación: James, Falcao, Mina, Cuadrado o lo más reciente Diaz por ejemplo y es que si, en los últimos años dicho país ha aumentado su nivel cuando de fútbol hablamos, pero mucho antes el nombre que pasaba por la boca de todos era "El pibe" Valderrama (Carlos Alberto Valderrama Palacio), un colombiano nacido en la ciudad de Santa Marta en el año 1961. Soy muy jovén y por ende yo no pude ver en tiempo real lo que era el como jugador, sin embargo tengo la dicha de que mi viejo sea Colombiano y desde muy chiquita me contara todo sobre los jugadores de aquella época.

Además de mi padre también recuerdo bien la serie "La selección", una producción de canal caracol que se emitió hace ya un par de años y su historia no debería ser olvidada. Antes les hable de Forlan y de que venia de una familia plagada de jugadores de fútbol antes que el, bueno, el padre del Pibe también lo era pero la diferencia entre ambos era su situación económica, Valderrama no la tuvo fácil... Lógicamente de allí empezó su amor al fútbol y desde que estaba en el colegio empezó a jugar, con la intención de seguir los pasos de su padre. Luego de las clases su destino eran las canchas de "El pescaito", que era el barrio donde vivía.

Tenia fuertes problemas con la ira, era ese típico compañero de colegio que se tomaba muy en serio los partidos durante las clases de educación física y siempre tenia problemas con los demás por su rendimiento con el balón. Incluso llego a estar detenido por casi dos meses por un pleito nocturno que tuvo, podríamos decir que allí estaba tocando fondo y ya sabemos que una vez que llegas a ese punto no queda otra cosa más que subir... Así es, gracias a esta experiencia el Pibe cambio su forma de ser y empezó a mejorar poco a poco su temperamento, pero más importante aun se planteo el tomarse el fútbol como algo serio en su vida.

Era una época de escasez para la selección de Colombia, estaba a punto de cumplir los 30 años sin siquiera clasificar a un mundial, pero un Valderrama recién egresado de la secundaria vendría decidido a cambiar la historia, con disciplina y constancia entreno con el fin de llevar a la selección nuevamente a participar en una copa del mundo, no fue tarea fácil, no podía cargar todo un equipo completo en sus hombros y en varias oportunidades tuvo que ver como fallaban pues la realidad era que no eran tan buenos. Con toda esta lucha se hizo conocido a nivel local, su cabello loco y su gran dominio de balón lo hacia diferente al resto, se volvió el corazón y líder del equipo.

El Pibe a pesar de tener el renombre que tuvo no gano títulos realmente importantes como: Una champions, libertadores o una copa del mundo. Su paso en el mundo del fútbol empezó en Millonarios donde no duro más de un año para luego dar el salto a Deportivo de Cali, allí estuvo un buen tiempo jugando un total de 143 partidos, es decir, fue el equipo donde más tuvo participación en la cancha, pero luego equipos extranjeros pusieron sus ojos en el, de allí salto al Montpellier donde se llevo una pokalsieger en los años 90, estaba muy bien pero apenas fueron 3 años, luego volvio a Colombia jugando para Independiente de Medellín, de allí al Atletico Junior donde gano dos Meister... Estuvo bastante de su carrera jugando en Colombia.

Yo diría que por lo que más se recuerda al Pibe es por su participación en la selección de su país y es que como lo dije antes el se convirtió en el líder de aquel equipo, un centrocampista que lleno de ilusión a todo un país, dio esperanzas de entrar al mundial de Italia 1990... ¿Y que creen?, lo lograron, cambiaron esa historia de más de 28 años sin entrar, incluso durante esa década participaron en los 3 mundiales lo cual puede no parecer mucho para otros países, pero para Colombia esto fue algo increíble, de nuevo eran un país mundialista. Durante esos 10 años incluso lograron un hecho histórico: Golear 5 - 0 a la Argentina de Diego Armando Maradona, estaba siendo un completo éxito, incluso el rey Pele lo incluyo en su lista de los 100 mejores jugadores del mundo y todo esto sin haber ganado: Mundiales, copas americas o champions... Simplemente por cambiar la historia de todo un país.

Podría hablar de muchos momentos, pues la historia de este jugador es muy interesante, pero quiero destacar aquel partido de Colombia vs Inglaterra en fase de grupos donde tristemente terminaría eliminada, Valderrama se encontraba triste pues sería su ultima vez en una copa del mundo así que como cualquier otro jugador en esa posición se encontraba mirando al suelo, en ese instante un joven Beckham se acercaría a el pidiendole cambiar camisetas. Sin duda en aquella epoca el Pibe era todo un icono.
