Cuba llegó a este torneo con una nómina de selección nacional, con una mezcla de veteranos y talentos emergentes, o sea, nada nuevo comparado con otros eventos donde hemos estado participando. Cada vez que se conforma, por parte de la Federación Cubana de Béisbol, un equipo Cuba, se genera mucha polémica, por la incertidumbre de si podrían hacer, o no, un buen papel.
Lo que más nos golpea, en todos los sentidos, es la ausencia de muchas de nuestras estrellas claves, quienes han emigrado a ligas mayores o cumplen contrato en Japón, así como en otros circuitos. Según la propia dirección del equipo cubano, el objetivo de esta cita está más que claro: jugar pelota. El equipo necesita ganar en experiencia, así como afinar sus estrategias tanto fuera como dentro del terreno, de cara al próximo Clásico Mundial de Béisbol.
Precisamente en este punto es donde se han comenzado a disparar las alarmas: se avecina el mayor evento internacional de béisbol y Cuba se muestra en la Serie de las Américas muy por debajo del nivel que alguna vez ocupó como potencia en dicho deporte. La fase clasificatoria habla por sí sola; Cuba cierra con un balance de 3 victorias y 3 derrotas, ubicándose en un modesto tercer lugar que a duras penas los clasificó para las semifinales.

Quién sabe si hoy llegue la revancha, aunque está dura la película porque estamos hablando de una liga de béisbol profesional con muchísimo oficio y experiencia en el terreno.
Otro posible cruce pudiera darse con Panamá, equipo que se encuentra invicto, o quizás contra Colombia o Nicaragua. Pero analicemos un poco el desempeño, el tú a tú del juego de pelota. Comenzaremos por el principio, en ese debut de poco brillo del equipo cubano, que no solo significó un tropiezo, más bien era el avance de la película, luego de perder con marcador de 5-4 ante los Leones de León de Nicaragua.
Aunque fue un encuentro cerrado, pudiera decirse de alguna manera, en definitivas el picheo cubano no pudo silenciar los maderos de los nicaragüenses, quienes siguen demostrando cómo le han subido dos rayitas a su béisbol. Contra Venezuela, qué te puedo decir, mientras tuve corriente eléctrica en casa, estuve viendo el encuentro y te puedo asegurar que se sintió como una final anticipada entre ambas nóminas.
Navegantes descifraron el picheo cubano y conectaron batazos oportunos, incluyendo el grand slam de Rougned Odor.
