¿Quién lo diría? El domingo, los Tiburones de la Guaira mostraron su peor cara ante los puertorriqueños y encajaron su primera derrota en la Serie del Caribe que se juega en el Loan Depot Park de Miami ¿La culpa? Lo que había sido hasta entonces su mayor debilidad: El bateo. No solo eso, le quedaban por delante dos duros escollos de tres partidos que restaban: los siempre peligrosos mexicanos de Hermosillo y los líderes indiscutidos del torneo originarios de Panamá. Nicaragua ya coqueteaba con la eliminación por ser el equipo más débil, entonces digamos, no contaba como traba.
Bien ¿recuerdan el largometraje "Moneyball"? En él, Brad Pitt encarna a un gerente general de un equipo de las mayores que no veía los partidos de su equipo, por una cábala mediante la cual si él estaba presente el equipo no ganaba. Bueno, así nos sentimos cuando vimos a México arrancar adelante en el marcador ante Ricardo Pinto, quien se suponía venía de hacer dos excelentes aperturas en la final, en las que no le anotaron carreras. Si éste era el fuerte de La Guaira ¿Qué les esperaba?

Who would have thought? On Sunday, the Guaira Sharks showed their worst side against the Puerto Ricans and conceded their first loss in the Caribbean Series being played at Miami's Loan Depot Park. What had been their biggest weakness until then: batting. Not only that, they had two tough challenges ahead of them in the remaining three games: the always dangerous Mexicans from Hermosillo and the undisputed leaders of the tournament from Panama. Nicaragua was already flirting with elimination as the weakest team, so let's say, it did not count as an obstacle.
Well, do you remember the feature film "Moneyball"? In it, Brad Pitt plays a general manager of a major league team who does not watch his team's games, because of a cabal whereby if he is present the team does not win. Los bates arremetieron contra los lanzadores mexicano en una celada montada en el séptimo inning, donde los escualos anotaron seis carreras liderados por el catcher Luis Torrens, quien a la postre se convirtió en el más valioso del partido.
Y luego de ver aquella única carrera anotada por los mexicanos, el pitcheo cumplió y la defensa también, para dejar en blanco el resto de las entradas de ese partido. La victoria ponía a los Tiburones en la puerta de la semifinal y eliminaba matemáticamente a los manitos. Anoche, se enfrentaban ante los líderes invictos del torneo los Federales de Chiriquí, quienes han paseado a sus anchas y ha resultado ser un equipo muy duro, además de competitivo. Bueno, nadie estaba preparado para el fenomenal juego de pelota que nos esperaba.

And after watching that one run scored by the Mexicans, the pitching came through and so did the defense, to blank the rest of the innings of that game. The victory put the Tiburones at the door of the semifinals and mathematically eliminated the Manitos. Last night, they faced the undefeated leaders of the tournament, the Federales de Chiriquí, who have been on a roll and have turned out to be a very tough and competitive team. Well, no one was prepared for the phenomenal ball game that awaited us.
Los panameños arrancaron adelante con dos carreras en el marcador, pero los Tiburones no los iban a dejar alejarse por mucho y descontaron una en el segundo episodio. Una más en el tercero ponían a distancia a los Federales, pero -como si fuera un "Deja vú"- los litoralenses esperaron hasta el sexto inning para montar una emboscada de tres carreras y voltear el partido dramáticamente con un doble productor de tres de Hernán Pérez (a la postre el más valioso). Es cierto, el batazo no fue contundente porque fue un globo que cayó detrás del primera base, pero como habían dos outs y las bases estaban llenas, todos los corredores habían salido y lograron anotar.
Alcides Escobar agregaría un cuadrangular y los panameños hicieron otra carrera en el noveno para poner dramatismo a la victoria venezolana. 5-4 y el boleto a semifinales asegurado, solo falta enfrentar a los Nicaragüenses ya eliminados. Las semifinales se jugaran el Jueves y la final el Viernes. Los Tiburones quedan igualados en la punta de la tabla de la serie del Caribe con los Federales y solo falta averiguar quienes serán los dos equipos que competirán contra ellos.

The Panamanians took a two-run lead, but the Sharks were not going to let them get away for long and scored one run in the second inning. One more in the third put the Federales at a distance, but -as if it were a "Deja vu"- the coastliners team waited until the sixth inning to mount a three-run ambush and dramatically turn the game around with a three-run double by Hernán Pérez (the most valuable double of the game). It is true, the hit was not convincing because it was a balloon that fell behind the first baseman, but since there were two outs and the bases were loaded, all the runners had left and managed to score.
Alcides Escobar would add a home run and the Panamanians added another run in the ninth to add drama to the Venezuelan victory. 5-4 and the ticket to the semifinals secured, only the Nicaraguans, already eliminated, remain to be faced. The semifinals will be played on Thursday and the final on Friday. The Tiburones are tied at the top of the Caribbean Series table with the Federales and only need to find out who will be the two teams that will compete against them.
