Citando al maestro Juan Luis Guerra el camino de la Vinotinto desde hoy hasta el martes será la persecución de esa visa, pase o boleto al repechaje que para más de 30 millones de personas representan un sueño frustrado de larga data. Pareciera que a nosotros nos gusta sufrir (en todos los ámbitos de la vida) para conseguir un objetivo y es que tenemos muchos años intentando que se den cosas y hoy por hoy quiero pensar que estamos más cerca de conseguirlas (también en varios ámbitos de la vida). Este pensamiento no se puede confundir con fe ciega o esperanza automática ya que realmente todo depende, en un gran porcentaje, de nosotros mismos.

Me dirán algunos, ¿que clase de apoyo es ese? - en estas instancias hay que ser cruelmente realistas y mantener las expectativas al límite, siempre estar con los pies en la tierra. Sacar un empate en el Monumental sería de las mayores hazañas que esta selección pudiera hacer tomando en cuenta todo el contexto que rodea el partido pero la verdad no lo veo posible. Ojalá suceda para así tener que retractarme. La Vinotinto no viene con el 11 de gala, hay par de jugadores vitales suspendidos por acumulación de tarjetas: el Brujo Martínez y el gran Telasco Segovia (compañero de Messi en el Miami). Esto sin dudas hará que el once inicial sea un poco diferente al habitual y le restará poderío en la zona media de la cancha.

Hoy se debería de salir con el "cuchillo entre los dientes" por la sencilla razón de que no hay mañana y es que como dije, la clasificación depende de nosotros, si se logra hacer lo mínimo. Apretar desde el minuto 1, ahogar el rival y presión alta tendría que ser la consigna, es verdad que el empate nos sirve de mucho pero si se sale con mentalidad de empatar lo más seguro es que perdamos de una manera escandalosa. Pero vuelvo al principio, este partido hay que verlo desde la calma y pensando en el martes contra Colombia.
I think Venezuela has nothing to lose at this point, so the way I see them approaching these upcoming two matches is all or nothing. Today, they should go out with their hands full for the simple reason that there's no tomorrow, and as I said, qualification depends on us if we can do the bare minimum. Pushing from the first minute, stifling the opponent, and high pressure should be the order of the day. It's true that a draw will help us a lot, but if we go out with the mentality of aiming for a draw, we'll most likely lose in outrageous fashion. But I'll go back to the beginning: this match has to be approached calmly and with an eye on Tuesday against Colombia.

Venezuela no tenía necesidad de llegar al límite a este par de fechas, partidos contra Perú, Chile y Uruguay (con muchas bajas) se debieron de haber ganado sin problemas pero es el mismo guión de siempre, ya nos lo sabemos. Si bien es cierto que dependemos de nosotros hay que mirar de reojo lo que haga Bolivia hoy contra Colombia y el martes contra Brasil. Si por casualidad a los bolivianos les da por convertirse en la Brasil del 2002 o en la Italia del 2006 y nosotros pinchamos en cualquier partido, no habrá nada que hacer. Eso es ser drástico pero es una opción que hay que considerar. El sufrimiento es algo que viene incluido con cada fecha de estas eliminatorias por lo que, para bien o para mal, ya es algo de lo que estamos muy acostumbrados.

Matches against Peru, Chile, and Uruguay (with many absences) should have been won easily, but it's the same old story, we already know that. While it's true that we depend on ourselves, we have to keep an eye on what Bolivia does today against Colombia and Tuesday against Brazil. If by chance the Bolivians decide to become like Brazil in 2002 or Italy in 2006 and we fail in any match, there's nothing we can do. That's being drastic, but it's an option we have to consider. Suffering is something that comes with every match of these qualifiers, so, for better or worse, it's something we're all too used to.
El partido realmente decisivo será el del día martes. Se juega en Maturín, el fortín de esta selección en estas eliminatorias por lo que la localía hay aprovecharla. No se si será el partido más trascendental de la Vinotinto en su historia pero ya les digo que por lo menos TOP 3 será. Arrastrándose, en una sola pierna o con los pulmones colapsados por el cansancio, ese partido hay que ganarlo. La visa para un sueño mundialista depende de 11 tipos en un campo corriendo detrás de un balón y de todo un país alentando para que ese anhelo se materialice. Creo que nunca se había estado tan cerca, de ahí a que estas fechas se respiren de otra forma y con una ilusión/nervios/ansiedad diferente. Como decía mi abuela: "Amanecerá y veremos..."
