El día jueves 27 de enero se reanudaron los partidos con una nueva fecha de las eliminatorias para el próximo mundial de Qatar y eso suponía una cosa: el estreno de José Pekerman como el nuevo entrenador de la Vinotinto. La situación de Venezuela con respecto a estas eliminatorias está más que decidida desde hace un par de fechas atrás pero eso no impide que no podamos ser la piedra en el camino de cualquier otra selección que todavía mantenga sus chances de ir a la cita mundialista.
On Thursday, January 27, the matches resumed with a new date of the qualifiers for the next World Cup in Qatar and that meant one thing: the debut of José Pekerman as the new coach of the Vinotinto. Venezuela's situation with respect to these qualifiers has been more than decided for a couple of dates ago, but that does not prevent us from being a stone in the path of any other team that still has a chance of going to the World Cup.

El primer ejemplo fue el que se dio en la tarde de ayer cuando la Vinotinto derrotó por goleada a Bolivia dándole a los del sur un golpe muy duro de cara a sus aspiraciones. En lo personal si estaba un poco curioso por como iban a salir los muchachos a la cancha bajo el mando esta vez de un técnico serio, exitoso, con experiencia mundialista y sobretodo con otra mentalidad de trabajo. El resultado? - para ser el primer partido, bastante complacido.

Primero que nada si creo que es muy pronto aún para ver si el desempeño que vimos ayer será el que veremos de ahora en adelante, ojala pero hay que tener prudencia y evitar los excesos de expectativas ya que a la larga eso nunca termina en nada bueno. Con Pekerman al mando estamos claros que muchas cosas comenzaron a cambiar, tanto a nivel de cancha como fuera de ella, y eso mis amigos es lo vital acá.
First of all I think it is still too early to see if the performance we saw yesterday will be the one we will see from now on, hopefully but we must be cautious and avoid excessive expectations because in the long run that never ends up in anything good. With Pekerman at the helm we are clear that many things began to change, both on and off the field, and that my friends is what is vital here.
En una oportunidad dije por estos lados que no importaba el entrenador que viniera, si no habían cambios a nivel gerencial, a nivel competitivo, a nivel del como se estaba manejando todo lo relacionado con las ligas inferiores y campeonato nacional no íbamos a ir a ninguna parte. El tema es que si, las cosas si empezaron a cambiar, reestructuraron todo el tema de los juveniles y de la misma liga nacional, se comprometieron a mejorar todas las instalaciones de alto rendimiento y lo más relevante, tienen que dejar a Pekerman trabajar sin ningún tipo de trabas.
I once said that it did not matter which coach came, if there were no changes at the managerial level, at the competitive level, at the level of how everything related to the lower leagues and the national championship was being handled, we were not going anywhere. The thing is that yes, things did start to change, they restructured everything related to the youth and the national league itself, they committed to improve all the high performance facilities and the most important thing, they have to let Pekerman work without any kind of obstacles.

Habiendo dicho todo aquello volvamos a Barinas y a lo que sucedió ayer. Venezuela salió con otro aire, los jugadores se veían con otra cara y eso se vio en la cancha, el cambio de actitud y de juego se notó. Después de una larga ausencia volvía nuestro delantero top, Salomón Rondón y con él la esperanza de que la Vinotinto retomara el gol y miren que lo hizo. Para que se hagan una idea, en 14 partidos Venezuela llevaba nueve goles apenas, el día de ayer hicieron cuatro que pudieron ser fácilmente siete.
Having said all that, let's go back to Barinas and what happened yesterday. Venezuela came out with a different look, the players had a different face and that was seen on the field, the change in attitude and play was noticeable. After a long absence, our top striker, Salomón Rondón, returned and with him the hope that the Vinotinto would get back to scoring goals and look what he did. To give you an idea, in 14 games Venezuela had only nine goals, yesterday they scored four that could easily have been seven.

Algo que pasó ayer y que llevábamos mucho tiempo esperando: Soteldo, Otero, Machís y Rondón juntos. Y cuando hablo de tiempo me refiero a años en los que todos los entrenadores pasados nunca los ponían a los cuatro juntos por diferentes razones; llegó Pekerman los puso desde el pitazo inicial y la magia se hizo. Porque fue magia ver a Soteldo entenderse de la manera como lo hizo con Oscar González por el lado izquierdo y a Machís hacer lo mismo con Ronald Hernández por el derecho y todo esto para terminar acompañando a un Otero imparable por el medio y a un Salomón intratable dentro del área.
Something that happened yesterday and that we had been waiting for a long time: Soteldo, Otero, Machís and Rondón together. And when I talk about time I mean years in which all past coaches never put the four together for different reasons; when Pekerman arrived he put them together from the opening whistle and the magic happened. Because it was magic to see Soteldo get along the way he did with Oscar González on the left side and Machís do the same with Ronald Hernández on the right and all this to end up accompanying an unstoppable Otero in the middle and an intractable Salomón inside the box.
Una Vinotinto MUY OFENSIVA, como hacía tiempo que no la veía y eso es la mano de Pekerman. Ahora, no todo es perfecto porque las fallas y despistes ofensivos siguen dando vuelta por ahí y fueron los culpables del único gol que nos hicieron; sin duda la defensa será el gran reto del técnico argentino para el futuro.
A VERY OFFENSIVE Vinotinto, as I have not seen for a long time and that is the hand of Pekerman. La victoria de ayer considero que se le puede atribuir a varias cosas: el cambio de mentalidad evidente que vimos, ya esa actitud cabizbaja y derrotista que observamos en partidos anteriores no estaba; lógicamente y a pesar de llevar muy poco tiempo el cambio en el modo de juego producto del estilo de Pekerman se comenzó a notar ligeramente y como última razón y sin quitar méritos al trabajo de los muchachos es que el nivel de Bolivia como visitante es desastroso, llevan 62 partidos consecutivos sin ganar en eliminatorias así que algo influyó esa estadística.
I believe that yesterday's victory can be attributed to several things: the evident change in mentality that we saw, and that crestfallen and defeatist attitude that we observed in previous matches was gone; logically and despite the fact that the change in the way of playing as a result of Pekerman's style began to be slightly noticed and as a last reason and without taking away merits to the work of the boys is that Bolivia's level as visitors is disastrous, they have 62 consecutive matches without winning in qualifiers so that statistic had some influence.
Veremos que tal se nos presenta esta nueva Vinotinto el día martes ante Uruguay, una selección que necesita ganar para seguir metida en la pelea. Ese partido si será un buen termómetro para medir adecuadamente a Venezuela. Entonces y respondiendo a mi pregunta inicial, ¿estamos en vía a un nuevo horizonte? - repito, es muy pronto para saberlo porque este es un proyecto a largo plazo pero quiero pensar que si, José Pekerman tiene todas las herramientas necesarias para convertir a la Vinotinto en una selección competitiva y que pueda dar la pelea para el próximo mundial del 2026. Así que amigos, paciencia y confianza, que si hay un momento para tener fe es ahora.
We will see how this new Vinotinto performs on Tuesday against Uruguay, a team that needs to win to stay in the fight. That match will be a good thermometer to properly measure Venezuela. So, to answer my initial question, are we on the way to a new horizon? - I repeat, it is too early to tell because this is a long-term project but I would like to think that yes, Jose Pekerman has all the necessary tools to turn the Vinotinto into a competitive team that can fight for the next World Cup in 2026.
