Ronda que se definen los equipos que siguen en competición en la Eurocopa, en esta etapa sin dudas el partido de Croacia contra Italia era el más importante del grupo C, ya que definía el segundo puesto y clasificación automática a la siguiente ronda. Italia tiene todo el peso de la historia, sin embargo, desde hace algunos años Croacia ha demostrado ser un rival importante en el ámbito internacional, por lo que suponía un partido muy atractivo de ver y analizar.
Lo que llamó la atención es la alineación de Italia que se acomoda con 3 defensores con dos jugadores muy cercanos a las bandas, un planteamiento diferente al que el entrenador Luciano Spalletti había colocado contra España, posiblemente como consecuencia del amplio dominio de la selección de España en el partido pasado, este planteamiento sugiere un enfoque un poco más defensivo, pero al mismo tiempo un aprovechamiento de los espacios por las bandas.
A pesar de que el planteamiento es de 3-1-4-2 en ciertos momentos, pero que se transformaba en un 4-4-2 debido a que Darmián pasaba a ser lateral por derecha, sobre todo, en los momentos en que Italia dominaba el balón, por lo que quedaban Calafiori y Bastoni como los defensores centrales y Dimarco pasaba a la lateral izquierda desde el medio campo, jugando como un falso lateral en un principio.
Croacia
Al principio del partido, era notorio el orden de Croacia en el campo, dominando los primeros minutos del encuentro con buenos pases y recuperación rápida, sin embargo, al jugar contra un equipo sólido que además posicionó por momentos a 5 defensores en el último tramo hicieron que se dificultaran las ideas ofensivas de Croacia a pesar de que hubo intentos para cada equipo.
Croacia había perdido esa sensación de selección ordenada, algo que pudo revivir en este partido a pesar de la derrota, a pesar de que poco sirve de consuelo, Croacia se marcha de la Eurocopa siendo un digno competidor.
Es evidente que Tanto Modric como otros jugadores ya no se encuentran en el nivel de torneos anteriores, sobre todo, en el último tramo del campo faltó esa chispa para desordenar a una correcta defensa italiana, no es hasta el minuto 55 que Modric aprovecha una oportunidad para convertirla en gol, sin embargo, minutos antes había errado un penal, algo que nunca hubiésemos imaginado.
Desde mi punto de vista, el planteamiento de Croacia fue totalmente correcto, ya que estuvo clasificada hasta el minuto 98. Pero algo que tiene el fútbol, es que nada está escrito hasta el final del partido. Un partido emocionante que terminó con un gol increíble.
Calafiori
En el artículo anterior mencioné las capacidades que tiene este defensor, de hecho, hice énfasis de que no se dejen llevar por ese autogol contra España, hoy hemos visto una mejor faceta del joven italiano, que desde mi punto de vista puede alcanzar el nivel de otras leyendas italianas en la defensa.
Este jugador tuvo un buen desempeño, tanto al momento de defender como al hacer pases y activar a sus compañeros. Calafiori es quien hace la jugada para el agónico gol del final del partido, haciendo algo que sabe hacer muy bien que es romper líneas y pasar de defensa a ataque en tan solo un par de movimientos. El italiano maneja el balón con astucia e incluso deja en el camino a algunos rivales, para luego hacer el pase justo para un gol espectacular de Zaccagni, un disparo de primera intensión con el interior del pie que se dirigió a la escuadra del conjunto croata, magia pura para los italianos y la caída de un equipo croata que había hecho todo bien para aguantar el partido.
Es bueno mencionar que Luciano Spalletti también realizó muy buenos movimientos ante la posibilidad de que el partido terminaría en derrota para los italianos, colocó a Zaccagni en lugar de Darmian (defensor por mediocampista ofensivo) que resultó determinante para la victoria italiana, además colocó a Scamacca con la firme intensión de colocar muchos hombres en ataque, sin embargo, la jugada clave del gol de la clasificación provino de un defensor con la suficiente firmeza, confianza y determinación como Calafiori.
Modric
Para muchos de nosotros es un momento triste debido a que Modric es de esos jugadores inolvidables, pero que debemos aceptar que es su última competición en un torneo internacional, no puede ser un jugador eterno y su historia perdurará en la mente de los amantes del fútbol. Un jugador que con talento se ganó el respeto de todo el mundo, en donde quiera que vaya. Este jugador será aplaudido de pie para el que ama este deporte. Esta es su última actuación en una Eurocopa, pero su legado para el fútbol croata será eterno.

What caught the eye is Italy's line-up which accommodates 3 defenders with two players very close to the flanks, a different approach to that which coach Luciano Spalletti had placed against Spain, possibly as a consequence of Spain's wide dominance in the last match, this approach suggests a slightly more defensive approach, but at the same time an exploitation of space down the flanks.
Although the approach is 3-1-4-2 at certain times, but transformed into a 4-4-2 due to Darmián moving to right-back, especially when Italy dominated the ball, leaving Calafiori and Bastoni as the central defenders and Dimarco moving to left-back from midfield, playing as a false full-back at first.

Croatia had lost that sense of an organised team, something they were able to revive in this match despite the defeat, although it is little consolation, Croatia leave the European Championship as a worthy competitor.
It is clear that both Modric and other players are no longer at the level of previous tournaments, especially in the last stretch of the field lacked that spark to disrupt a correct Italian defence, it is not until the 55th minute that Modric takes a chance to convert it into a goal, however, minutes before he had missed a penalty, something we would never have imagined.

Calafiori
In the previous article I mentioned the capabilities that this defender has, in fact, I emphasized not to get carried away by that own goal against Spain, today we have seen a better side of the young Italian, who from my point of view can reach the level of other Italian legends in defense.
This player performed well, both when defending and when making passes and activating his teammates. Calafiori is the one who makes the play for the agonising goal at the end of the game, doing something he does very well which is to break lines and go from defence to attack in just a couple of moves. The Italian handles the ball cleverly and even leaves a few opponents in the way, then makes the right pass for a spectacular goal by Zaccagni, a first-time shot with the inside of his foot into the top corner of the Croatian net, pure magic for the Italians and the downfall of a Croatian team that had done everything right to hold on to the game.
It is worth mentioning that Luciano Spalletti also made very good moves in the face of the possibility that the match would end in defeat for the Italians, he placed Zaccagni in place of Darmian (defender for attacking midfielder) which proved decisive for the Italian victory, he also placed Scamacca with the firm intention of placing many men in attack, however, the key play of the qualifying goal came from a defender with enough firmness, confidence and determination as Calafiori.
Modric
For many of us it is a sad moment because Modric is one of those unforgettable players, but we must accept that this is his last competition in an international tournament, he cannot be an eternal player and his story will live on in the minds of football lovers. A player who with talent earned the respect of the whole world, wherever he goes. This player will be given a standing ovation for those who love this sport. This is his last performance at a European Championship, but his legacy for Croatian football will be eternal.
