Mi Aporte para esta Gran Iniciativa Deportiva.
On the occasion of participating in the interesting initiative created by our friend
, in the great community of
, about our sporting moment in history. It is truly a titanic task to choose just one, when in reality there are so many feats, those that show us that sport has the magic to take the human being beyond his limits. It is then, when I start to drift between those moments where an athlete or a group of them, did something outstanding in a competition, where winning is surely the most remarkable. In many occasions, the way of achieving the victory also gives that plus that takes the moment to another level. So, taking into account that the main objective is to compete to win, I will talk precisely about a great winner, when in one of his last feats, he gave us one of the most remarkable moments in the history of sport, which is a special part of my favorites.
Collective sports are very colorful, attract many fans and also generate a lot of money; as I write these lines, I remember the words of my table tennis coach Carlos Reyes, when we were concentrated on the eve of the start of competition, in the beautiful city of San Cristobal Tachira State back in 1999, (he always met us to review the game tactics, advice and psychological support to control nerves and focus on each match), that day he told us: "Guys, we must be focused, sleep well and eat a strong breakfast. Remember that, unlike basketball, softball and volleyball players, many times they party and sleep late, maybe they do it because they know they can be replaced by another player from the bench; however, with you it is different, you have no one to replace you, because it is a one-on-one game, so you are the one who is there and you must be responsible for doing your best."
For the above mentioned, I have a certain preference for the moments of sport when they are individual, now comes the other problem, is that there are many sports disciplines that I like and I have followed for some time, then I have decided for one of the sports that I most enjoy watching and I always talk about, as you already know well, I am referring to tennis. Who doesn't remember in the 90's Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten, Marcelo Rios, Jim Courier, Patrick Rafter or our own Nicolas Pereira?
Certainly, that was a golden era for tennis, a highly competitive sport that at the end of that decade saw the emergence of a young star, who would take it to unthinkable levels.
¿Saben a quién me refiero?
Do you know who I am referring to? The man who has best represented this sport, his majesty of tennis, Roger Federer.
He is a guy with a brilliant way of playing, he combines elegance and precision and has become a world idol of the sport, considered by many (specialists, players and fans) not only as the best tennis player of all time, but as the best athlete in history; and the truth is that he is not lacking in reasons. For an athlete to be considered the best, he must have done incredible things. In truth, there are very few human beings who transcend the figure of the great athlete, just to cite a few great examples: Edson Arantes (Oh King) Pelé, Casiuss Clay (Muhammad Ali, Carl Lewis, Diego Armando Maradona, Michael Jordan, Michael Schumacher or Zinedine Zidane. Well, to the surprise of many, Roger Federer has occupied for some years now, a privileged place in this select list of sports idols of history.
Now, after the presentation, I will tell you about the day in which "His Majesty of Tennis" made an achievement that stands out among the many that he has compiled throughout his extensive and successful career. It could have been the day he won his eighth Wimbledon trophy, which coincidentally was the same day he surpassed Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grands Slams, the most for a male player at the time. However, history had a special moment in store for him, nine years later, because of the way he arrived and advanced in one of the most closely contested tournaments, such as the Australian Open, and even though it had the participation of all the tennis elite, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, among others; On this occasion, Roger made history again, with another double feat, obtaining in an epic way his twentieth Grand Slam title and being the oldest player to achieve it (36 years old) and it was on Sunday, January 28, 2018, when he faced a well-known rival as is the Croatian Marin Cilic, whom he defeated in a marathon match, which was extended to 5 sets, after 3 hours and 7 minutes, with score of 6 - 2 ; 7 - 6 ; 6 - 3 ; 3 - 6 ; 6 - 1. With the well-deserved and disputed victory, he became the first tennis player in history to reach such an achievement: 20 Grand Slam titles. If there was anyone capable of achieving it at that time, it was the Swiss watch. A feat applauded by the whole world, which perhaps for the last time, surrendered at the feet of the athlete who took tennis to the rhythm of perfection, to the level it is today and that although it is certainly very likely to be surpassed by his teammates in the "Big Three", has remained in the history of the sport, as the first to achieve it. That unforgettable day, Roger gave an infinite lesson of constancy, especially for those who considered him just another retiree, or just a stubborn old man, since he had to wait 5 years to raise again in Majors Title, between 2012 and 2017; and it was in 2018 the year he got his consecration, his well-deserved award for the delivery and constant work.
There is a very wise saying that goes: Records are made to be broken, in reality I never imagined that another athlete would surpass Michael Jordan in his status of Best Sportsman in history, Roger Federer did it and with the passing of the years he will also be surpassed. It is the great and beautiful thing about sport, in which men and legends are forged.
