La hija ilustre del Imperio Austro- Húngaro. Una de las joyas de Europa, y que, en unos días, concretamente entre el 19 y el 27 de agosto, se convertirá en la capital del atletismo mundial.
Cuba ha participado en todos los campeonatos mundiales desde que iniciaron en 1983. Esta será la edición 19 de estos torneos del orbe.
Y había obtenido al menos una medalla en todas las ediciones hasta que llegó Eugene, en un fatídico 2022 donde la mejor actuación fueron los cuartos lugares de Maykel Massó en la longitud y Leyanis Pérez en el triple salto.
Cuba ha ganado 59 medallas , distribuidas en 22 títulos, 24 metales de plata y 14 de bronce. Ocupa el lugar 10, de un listado dominado por los Estados Unidos (183-126-15).
Atenas´97 fue testigo de la mejor actuación histórica de Cuba en estas lides. Esta Isla se ubicó en el tercer puesto del medallero general.
Compitieron 20 atletas y consiguieron cuatro metales dorados (Ana Fidelia Quirot, Javier Sotomayor, Iván Pedroso y Yoelbi Quesada); uno plateado (Norberto Téllez) y otro bronceado (Aliecer Urrutia), además de dos cuartos lugares (Iván García y relevo 4×100 masculino), un sexto (Sonia Bisset) y dos séptimos (Olisdeilys Menéndez y Emeterio González).
Individualmente Yipsi Moreno es la que más veces ha subido al podio, en cinco ocasiones, con tres títulos y dos subtítulos. En tanto Iván Pedroso resulta el máximo ganador de cetros con cuatro. De Göteborg 1995 a Edmonton 2001 fue prácticamente invencible.
El primer medallista fue Luís Mariano Delís en lanzamiento de disco con un envío de 67.36 valido para llevarse la medalla de plata.
Los primeros títulos llegaron en Stuttgart 1993 con el salto de altura como protagonista. Allí se consumaron los reinados de Javier Sotomayor con un salto de 2.40m e Ioamnet Quintero con una marca de 1.99m.
La última atleta cubana subirse a lo más alto del podio fue Yaimé Pérez, ganadora de la prueba del lanzamiento del disco en Doha 2019.
Cuba llega a Budapest con 21 atletas, 13 damas y 8 caballeros, 5 más que en Oregón, donde se clasificaron 16 aunque solo compitieron 14. Yiselena Ballar abandonó el grupo antes del evento y Yorgelis Rodríguez no pudo actuar por lesión.
¿Podrá Cuba retomar la senda del podio perdida en Eugene 2022 ?
