Entramos en la semana decisiva en el Australia Open.
En la ATP ha habido sus sorpresas, al menos para mí. Sin embargo, a pesar de las altas temperaturas y de la humedad, los tenistas han dado un espectáculo digno de recordar. El que termine campeón del primer Grand Slam del año lo será porque ha dado todo de sí en la cancha.

We enter the decisive week at the Australia Open.
In the ATP there have been some surprises, at least for me. However, despite the high temperatures and humidity, the tennis players have given a show worth remembering. Whoever ends up champion of the first Grand Slam of the year will be so because they have given their all on the court.

Gael Monfils vs Matteo Berrettini
Monfils ganó a Kecmanovic en tres sets con dominio y cierta facilidad. Desde hace mucho tiempo no veía a este tenista francés con tanta confianza sobre la superficie dura.
Berrettini hizo lo propio para vencer a Pedro Carreño Busta. El sets más complicado, desde mi punto de vista, fue el segundo donde tuvo que ir a tiebreak para definirlo. El juego de Berretini se ve sólido para seguir avanzando. Él es un maestro en jugar bajo presión y ya se encuentra en una etapa de gran exigencia. Tiene la ventaja sobre Monfils, en cancha dura, de 2-0.
Monfils won Kecmanovic in three sets with dominance and some ease. It has been a long time since I have seen this French tennis player with so much confidence on hard surface.
Berrettini did the same to beat Pedro Carreño Busta. The most complicated set, from my point of view, was the second where he had to go to tiebreak to define it. Berretini's game looks solid to keep moving forward. He is a master at playing under pressure and is already at a very demanding stage. He has the edge over Monfils, on hard court, at 2-0.

Denis Shapovalov vs Rafael Nadal
Shapovalov le ganó a Zverev en un partido inolvidable para él. Desde el inicio logró concentrarse y no dejarse apabullar por el número 3 de la ATP. El segundo set estuvo cargado de emociones. Shapovalov quebró primero y Zverev le quebró también. Estuvo muy parejo con acertadas devoluciones del canadiense. Shapovalov logró ganar ese set en tiebreak y todo lo demás es historia.
Rafael Nadal llegó a esta instancia venciendo a Mannarino y demostrando que su regreso a las canchas es para dejar la piel, como siempre lo ha hecho. El primer set fue el más complicado y uno de los más largos en el Australia Open. Rafa Nadal es uno de los mejores tenistas en devolución.
Shapovalov beat Zverev in an unforgettable match for him. From the start he managed to concentrate and not get overwhelmed by the ATP number 3. The second set was full of emotions. Shapovalov broke first and Zverev broke him as well. It was very even with accurate returns from the Canadian. Shapovalov managed to win that set in tiebreak and everything else is history.
Rafael Nadal reached this stage beating Mannarino and showing that his return to the courts is to leave the skin, as he has always done. The first set was the most complicated and one of the longest at the Australia Open. Rafa Nadal is one of the best returning tennis players.

Jannik Sinner vs Stéfanos Tsitsipas
Sinner jugó uno de los partidos que más me han gustado. Tuvo una visión de juego acertada, se movió bien en la cancha y no le dejó opciones a Miñaur con varias pelotas cruzadas. Ganó en tres sets con buen juego de saques y una excelente defensa.
Tsitsipas en un partido de cinco sets venció al estadounidense Taylor Fritz. Durante varios momentos de ese partido Tsitsipas perdió concentración y nunca tuvo un dominio firme. Tiene inconstancia pero sabe ganar los puntos importantes, tal como lo hizo en los dos últimos sets.
Sinner played one of the matches I liked the most. He had an accurate game vision, moved well on the court and left no options to Miñaur with several cross-court balls. He won in three sets with good serving game and excellent defense.
Tsitsipas in a five-set match defeated American Taylor Fritz. During several moments of that match Tsitsipas lost concentration and never had a firm grip. He is inconsistent but knows how to win the important points, as he did in the last two sets.

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Daniil Medvedev
El canadiense Auger-Aliassime le ganó a Marin Cilic en cuatro sets. Este joven de 21 años es una de las grandes promesas del tenis y ha venido mejorando en ranking ATP con gran tenacidad. Pienso que lo más interesante de ese partido fue revertir el hecho de que él perdió el primer set y tuvo que trabajar mucho en el segundo para ganarlo. De allí en adelante le destruyó la confianza a Cilic. El cuarto set no fue nada sencillo y se definió en tiebreak. Es un gran chico y un gran contendor para Medvedev.
Medvedev, el número dos del mundo, ha estado dominante con su juego. Sigue trabajando a los contrarios con pelotas muy rasantes en la red y con alto porcentaje de primer y segundo servicio ganado. Es uno de los tenistas que tienen actualmente las mejores devoluciones y defensas. Es este momento es el gran favorito para ganar el primer Grang Slam del año. Recordemos que es el campeón del US Open 2021 contra Djokovic y fue finalista de este certamen el año pasado precisamente contra Nole.
Canadian Auger-Aliassime beat Marin Cilic in four sets. This young 21 years old is one of the great promises of tennis and has been improving in ATP ranking with great tenacity. I think the most interesting thing about that match was the reversal of the fact that he lost the first set and had to work hard in the second to win it. From then on he destroyed Cilic's confidence. He is one of the players who currently has the best returns and defenses. At this moment he is the great favorite to win the first Grand Slam of the year. Antes de cerrar este post quisiera hacer un comentario de la rama femenina en el Australia Open.
Como siempre, las damas tienen altos y bajos en los Grand Slam. Osaka, posiblemente la gran favorita, fue eliminada en tercera ronda por Anisimova. Garbiñe Muguruza fue eliminada en segunda ronda por la francesa Cornet. La joven campeona del US Open 2021, Emma Raducanu fue eliminada, en segunda ronda, por Kovinic en una partido muy emotivo, bien jugado por ambas pero mejor aún por la tenista de Montenegro. Vale decir que Raducanu presentaba una molestia en su mano diestra.
La gran favorita para llevarse este torneo es Ashleight Barty, actual número 1 del mundo. Su paso por Australia ha sido arrollador, ganando a todas sus contendoras: Tsurenko, Bronzetti, Giorgi y Anisimova, en dos sets.
Before closing this post I would like to make a comment on the women's branch at the Australia Open.
As always, the ladies have ups and downs in the Grand Slams. Osaka, arguably the heavy favorite, was eliminated in the third round by Anisimova. Garbiñe Muguruza was eliminated in the second round by France's Cornet. The young champion of the US Open 2021, Emma Raducanu was eliminated in the second round by Kovinic in a very emotional match, well played by both but even better by the Montenegrin player. It is worth mentioning that Raducanu had a discomfort in her right hand.
The big favorite to win this tournament is Ashleight Barty, current world number 1. Her performance in Australia has been overwhelming, winning all her contenders: Tsurenko, Bronzetti, Giorgi and Anisimova, in two sets.
