La selección de Italia quedó eliminada del Mundial de Fútbol por tercera vez consecutiva; el gran temor que tenía por completo el fútbol italiano se oficializó el día de ayer cuando la Azzurra perdió el encuentro definitorio del repechaje mundialista contra la selección de Bosnia y Herzegovina en una tanda de penales en donde los italianos, de tres cobros realizados, tan solo anotaron uno, en cambio, la efectividad de los bosnios fue total y por eso la selección tetracampeona del mundo, nuevamente, no asistirá a la gran fiesta del fútbol.

The Italian national team was eliminated from the World Cup for the third consecutive time; the great fear that had gripped Italian football was confirmed yesterday when the Azzurri lost the decisive World Cup playoff match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout in which the Italians, out of three attempts, scored only one, while the Bosnians were 100% effective, and so the four-time world champions will once again miss out on the world’s biggest soccer tournament.
El primer párrafo de esta publicación describe de manera simple el nuevo fracaso que sufrió la selección italiana en su obligación de estar en un mundial, y digo obligación porque, al ser una multicampeona del torneo, es de esperar que tenga una representación digna para que cumpla con su participación, así como lo han hecho otras selecciones también campeonas del mundo, pero por tercera ocasión, Italia no es que haya fallado en superar el repechaje, sino que, en la extensa fase de grupos, tampoco alcanzó las expectativas y eso les ha llevado a estar en una instancia que, en mi opinión, refleja el estado deplorable del fútbol italiano.

The first paragraph of this post simply describes the Italian national team’s latest failure to qualify for the World Cup—and I say “obligation” because, as a multiple-time champion of the tournament, one would expect it to field a strong enough squad to compete effectively, just as other World Cup-winning teams have done— but for the third time, Italy didn’t just fail to make it through the playoffs; rather, in the long group stage, it also fell short of expectations, and that has led them to a situation that, in my opinion, reflects the deplorable state of Italian football.
Me gustaría pensar que existió cierta unión en el aficionado al fútbol con respecto a querer ver nuevamente a Italia disputar un mundial, pero creo que la unanimidad estaba reflejada en la expectativa de si era posible o no que Italia perdiera otra cita mundialista, y es que en el fútbol actual y en esta etapa clasificatoria, más lo sucedido en los dos anteriores repechajes, era de esperar que existiera un (alto) porcentaje en donde la posibilidad de otra debacle italiana era posible, pero siendo sincero y viendo la actuación de Italia en el encuentro que ofreció la oportunidad de disputar la importante final del repechaje, pensé que este equipo tenía grandes posibilidades; lamentablemente, lo impredecible de este deporte ofreció un panorama adverso a un equipo que tenía todo a favor, tanto antes como en los minutos iniciales de tan relevante encuentro.

I’d like to think there was a certain sense of unity among soccer fans regarding their desire to see Italy compete in the World Cup again, but I believe the consensus centered on whether or not it was possible for Italy to miss out on another World Cup, and the fact is that in today’s soccer and at this stage of qualifying—especially given what happened in the two previous playoffs—it was to be expected that there would be a (high) percentage of people who thought another Italian debacle was possible. But to be honest, watching Italy’s performance in the match that gave them the chance to play in the crucial playoff final, I thought this team had a great chance; unfortunately, the unpredictability of this sport presented an adverse scenario for a team that had everything going for it, both before and in the opening minutes of such a crucial match.
Seguramente hubo quien pensó que si este encuentro se hubiera disputado en años anteriores, la posibilidad de clasificación para Italia hubiera elevado mucho más; esto lo digo porque recordemos que en temporadas anteriores los clubes italianos estuvieron presentes en instancias definitorias de los diferentes torneos de clubes organizados por la UEFA; equipos como Fiorentina e Inter Milán fueron subcampeones en los últimos 3 años y AS Roma junto a Atalanta obtuvieron títulos en ese mismo tiempo, pero es ahí donde existe un gran problema para el fútbol italiano, ya que si se revisa la relevancia del jugador de ese país en sus clubes, encontraremos que es poca, así como la de todos los clubes, ya que justamente cada uno de esos equipos está dominado por futbolistas extranjeros, lo cual corta enormemente la protección de nuevos jugadores que deben practicar fútbol de manera profesional en divisiones menores y eso hace que no sean parte del primer equipo de Italia.

Surely there were those who thought that if this match had been played in previous years, Italy’s chances of qualifying would have been much higher; I say this because, as we recall, in past seasons Italian clubs were present in the decisive stages of the various club tournaments organized by UEFA; teams like Fiorentina and Inter Milan were runners-up in the last three years, and AS Roma and Atalanta won titles during that same period, but that is precisely where a major problem lies for Italian soccer. If we examine the role of Italian players in their clubs, we find it to be minimal—as is the case with all clubs—since each of these teams is dominated by foreign players. This severely limits opportunities for young players who must develop professionally in the lower divisions, preventing them from making the Italian national team.
Personalmente, creo que la Azzurra intentó de mejor manera clasificar al mundial; tenía un grupo bastante accesible en donde Noruega era el rival más fuerte, pero al justamente no presentar un alto nivel competitivo lo cual les hizo caer contra los noruegos en sus dos enfrentamientos, eso les hizo nuevamente estar en una posición que pienso les generó una gran presión a sabiendas que anteriormente cayeron derrotados contra dos rivales de menor calidad y repetir ese escenario seguramente generó el miedo a repetir ese escenario convirtiéndose en una generación perdedora; lamentablemente eso vuelve a ocurrir a jugadores que habían experimentado duras derritas, pero también tenia la experiencia en disputar finales de Champions League y de exigentes torneos por el título de Serie A, pero su actuación en la actual temporada no es para nada buena y ese tipo de actitud y desempeño los llevaron nuevamente a perder la gran meta y dejar a un país tan futbolero fuera del Mundial. No sé que se sucederá con la Federación Italiana de Fútbol y su presidente Gabriele Gravina, quien en su mandato ha visto como su selección no es mundialista y que su torneo no recupera la admiración de antaño, en mi opinión, Gravina es el único y gran culpable de todos este desastre porque su manejo en la generación de talento italiano es pobre y está cerca de perder nuevamente a una generación de jugadores que a pesar de ser considerada como perdedora, creo que será muy difícil de suplantar porque justamente no hay nadie que pueda tomar el puesto en varias zonas del campo; Italia está a contratiempo y deberán trabajar de manera inmediata para poder tener nuevamente posibilidad de ser mundialistas.

Personally, I think the Azzurri did their best to qualify for the World Cup; they had a fairly manageable group where Norway was the strongest opponent, but precisely because they didn’t perform at a high competitive level—which led to their losses against the Norwegians in both matches—that put them once again in a position that I think put immense pressure on them, knowing they had previously lost to two weaker opponents; the fear of repeating that scenario and becoming a “losing generation” surely set in; Unfortunately, this happens again to players who had experienced tough defeats, but who also had the experience of playing in Champions League finals and demanding Serie A title races. However, their performance this season has been far from good, and that kind of attitude and performance led them once again to miss their big goal and leave a country so passionate about soccer out of the World Cup. I don’t know what will happen with the Italian Football Federation and its president, Gabriele Gravina, who during his tenure has seen his national team fail to qualify for the World Cup and the league fail to regain its former prestige. In my opinion, Gravina is the sole and primary culprit behind this entire disaster because his management of Italian talent development is poor, and he is on the verge of losing yet another generation of players who, despite being considered a “lost generation,” I believe will be very difficult to replace because there is simply no one who can fill their roles in various positions on the field; Italy is in a slump and must take immediate action to regain a chance at qualifying for the World Cup.
