It's been a long time since they appeared to be dying, but they are breathing and alive in Europe; Todd Bohely's millionaire project at Chelsea still has history to write in this UEFA Champions League and, although the overall picture of Graham Potter's team's performance is not entirely encouraging, they are through to the quarter-finals of Europe's top club competition; Chelsea, who arrived at Signal Iduna Park almost in intensive care and ended up losing by the minimum on German soil, had a tough test to overcome at home.
There was little to suggest the Blues could pull off the comeback at Stamford Bridge, Borussia Dortmund's form was impeccable and Potter's side had won just two games so far in 2023. Football and its mysterious designs! While the signs of footballing improvement in their win over Leeds United were visible, few were confident that the Blues could turn the tie around against a Dortmund side that, until the 90 minutes on London soil, had been on a blistering run of form.
Chelsea have played their best game so far in 2023 by far, and it has resulted in the sweet reward of stringing together victories for the first time in a long time to qualify for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Todd Bohely has been able to breathe a sigh of relief that his project still has a chance of competing for Europe's top prize this season, while Graham Potter -no relation to the mythical wizard devised by J.K. Rowling- can continue to juggle and work his magic to stay in the Blue dugout.

Mucho peso de encima fue el que se quitaron el dueño y el entrenador del conjunto londinense, pero Stamford Bridge y su noche europea tenían deparadas más reivindicaciones; puesto que dos jugadores sumamente cuestionados en las últimas semanas pudieron ver puerta para llevar a los suyos a la siguiente fase en la búsqueda de la “Orejona” más hermosa de todas. Sterling y Havertz han sabido encontrar sus propias válvulas de escape ante un Dortmund que cayó con honor, pero sin mucho orgullo. La Premier no pinta nada bien para el Chelsea que ha firmado una temporada por demás gris, pero la Champions sigue ahí para los Blues.
El día en que más lo necesitaba en lo que va de esta temporada, el Chelsea encontró su fútbol, uno que por momentos fue ardiente, los de Potter recobraron la memoria y dotaron de alma a su juego en el más oportuno de los momentos. La atmósfera de Stamford Bridge era como la de un volcán a punto de hacer erupción, la afición quería creer en la remontada y contagió a sus jugadores hasta llevarlos en volandas a creer. Las noches de Champions League están cargadas de magia, de misticismo, de historias que, a priori, parecían imposibles de relatar.
A lot of weight was lifted off the shoulders of the London club's owner and manager, but Stamford Bridge and its European night had more vindication in store as two players who have been under fire in recent weeks found the net to take their side into the next round in the quest for the most beautiful "Orejona" of all. Sterling and Havertz have been able to find their own escape valves against a Dortmund side that went down with honour, but without much pride. The Premier League is not looking good for Chelsea, who have had a very dull season, but the Champions League is still there for the Blues.
On the day when they needed it most so far this season, Chelsea found their football, one that was at times fiery, Potter's side regained their memory and put soul into their play at the most opportune of times. The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge was like that of a volcano about to erupt, the fans wanting to believe in the comeback and infecting their players into believing. Champions League nights are full of magic, of mysticism, of stories that, a priori, seemed impossible to tell.
Graham Potter se ha convertido en el segundo entrenador inglés en ganar cinco partidos de la UEFA Champions League en una sola temporada, después de Bobby Robson con el Newcastle en 2002-03; tan histórico como importante ha sido el triunfo que a Potter le ha llegado en un momento por demás complejo, el entrenador inglés respira una profunda bocanada de oxígeno. Su Chelsea saltó al campo con tal determinación que las primeras dos ocasiones de peligro llegaron en los pies de Joao Félix y en la faceta defensiva todo parecía estar controlado hasta que un tiro libre de Marco Reus forzó una magnífica atajada de Kepa para sostener el cero en su arco.

Siete juegos hilaba Havertz sin marcar un gol, el palo ya le había negado la gloria y después, un fuera de lugar de Sterling hizo que una joya de remate suyo no subiese al marcador. ¡Havertz parecía seguir negado de cara a puerta!

Trezic's men looked to put the game to bed and, although they did not quite reach the home side's penalty area, they managed to neutralise the Blue's early siege. In the 29th minute the post would save Dortmund - as it did on a couple of occasions in the first leg - as Kai Havertz's shot hit the woodwork and Terzic huffed and puffed in his technical area. Seven games Havertz had gone seven without a goal, the post had already denied him glory, and then Sterling's offside meant that a gem of a finish of his own failed to find the back of the net - Havertz still looked to be in denial in front of goal!

El Chelsea no cejaba en sus esfuerzos por marcar un gol que les diera la paridad en el global antes del descanso y tanta insistencia traería consigo el premio del tan ansiado tanto del empate. Al minuto 43’ Ben Chilwell sirvió una pelota rasante que Sterling no atinó a rematar del todo, aunque la esférica quedó viva, alta dosis de fortuna para que, tras un rebote posterior al intento de rechace defensivo, ese mismo balón quedase botando para exigir besar las redes. 1-0 adelantaba el Chelsea en una jugada que fue todo menos aseada, los goles feos valen lo mismo que aquellos cargados de belleza estética. Paridad en el marcador global al descanso.
Si los Blues tuvieron a bien comenzar la primera mitad del encuentro con buenas sensaciones y un fútbol ofensivo que tardó en surtir efecto para fines tangibles; la segunda mitad les vendría de cara, pues en su primer ataque al minuto 48’ un centro de Chilwell golpeó la mano de Wolf dentro del área y tras la revisión en el VAR se sancionó penalti. El cobro lo tomó Kai Havertz que falló en primera instancia, y seguía con su negación de cara al gol; pero la invasión de área hizo que su cobro se repitiese y, en la segunda chance que el fútbol le concedió desde el manchón, el ariete alemán pudo por fin aliviar su sequía goleadora.
El 2-0 que embocó Havertz sería el marcador final de un encuentro que gozó de más ocasiones por ambos bandos, pero los cartones no habrían de moverse más. Segunda victoria al hilo para los de Graham Potter que, además, han hilado vallas invictas. El Chelsea ha superado ya cinco eliminatorias de octavos de final de UEFA Champions League tras haber perdido el encuentro de ida, empatando así el mayor número de remontadas en la historia de la competición en esta fase junto al Barcelona, Juventus y Real Madrid.
Chelsea were relentless in their efforts to score a goal that would give them parity on aggregate before half-time and so much persistence brought the long-awaited equaliser. In the 43rd minute Ben Chilwell delivered a low ball that Sterling couldn't quite get on the end of, although the ball was left alive, a high dose of good fortune that, after a rebound following an attempted defensive rebound, the same ball was left bouncing to demand to kiss the net. 1-0 ahead for Chelsea in a move that was anything but neat, ugly goals are worth as much as those laden with aesthetic beauty. Parity on aggregate at half-time.
If the Blues were good enough to start the first half with a good feeling and an attacking football that took a while to have any tangible effect, the second half would come to them, as in their first attack in the 48th minute a cross from Chilwell hit Wolf's hand inside the box and after a VAR review a penalty was awarded. The spot-kick was taken by Kai Havertz, who missed first time, and continued his denial in front of goal; but the invasion of the area meant that his spot-kick was retaken and, in the second chance that football granted him from the spot, the German striker was finally able to alleviate his goal drought.
Havertz's 2-0 scoreline was the final score in a game that saw more chances for both sides, but the scores were not to be moved any further. It was the second win in a row for Graham Potter's side, who have now gone five wins without conceding a goal. Chelsea have now come through five UEFA Champions League round of 16 ties after losing the first leg, equalling the most comebacks in the competition's history at this stage alongside Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid.
