Whenever the power of unity is discussed, our mind falls back to the story of babel. The story holds such a great lesson of what oneness can achieve, but it also was the beginning of disunity. The people grew in number, speaking in one tongue, decided to build a tower high enough to reach the heavens. Sometimes I wonder what their motive was; was it freedom they wanted? Was it the fame? Or was it because they were curious to know what the heavens look like? No one can tell but their oneness was utilized wrongfully. Even though it was considered to be rebellion against their maker, God understood that their oneness could make it possible to achieve that which they set to do. My grandma once told me the heavens were closer to the earth at that time, and that the rebellion to build a tower made God put a wide gap between the heavens and earth. I know that's a fairytale but the question is "How well do we utilize our oneness?".
The confusion in languages brought a gap. A gap in communication and comprehension, a gap in unity of purpose, a gap in our norms, culture, and tradition that differs from another. Even though these cultures are unique, they have opened a space for differences. Whenever unity is discussed, it's this gap we try to fill and to make us realize that we can become greater if we set our languages, cultures, traditions, norms, etc aside and embrace unity. It all started in Babel but this confusion and differences now lives in our heart and it's passed down to generations. We may be different physically and in languages but if our heart is in unity, there's nothing we can't achieve.
Unity as powerful as it is can either build or destroy us. It all depends on our decision as a group. We can choose to build or destroy or sometimes become proud and use it negatively to glorify oneself. Unity works inline with selflessness. Where selflessness is absent, the motives become destructive. God himself came down to see the works, he saw that they were one and nothing could stop them from achieving that which they had set to do. Oneness is so powerful that nothing can stop us if we want to achieve it but in oneness we should guard our thoughts.
