Hello everyone! This weekend past I took part in the King of the Cape Warhammer 40,000 tournament, you can find my post about that HERE.
I need to do these blow by blow battle reports quickly now, before details begin to fade!
Right, the tournmanet lists are no longer visible but I had a pretty decent idea of what this Death Guard army was capable of and the units it had in it:
- Lord of Contagion
- Tallyman
- Foul Blightspawn
- Malignant Plague Caster
- 3x Bloat Drones
- 1x Plagueburst Crawler
- 2x Poxwalker Squads
- 3x Plague Marine Squads
- 2x Blightlord Squads
- 2x Rhino Transport
So let me explain my opponent's set up. In the picture below he had not entirely set up, but I remember how he did it.
The Plagueburst Crawler is the Daemon Engine on the right with the big gun. It also has two other guns, all of them deal lots of damage. On the left you see a Rhino Transport. It looks like a big gun on it as well, this is actually his Nurgle Lord, the Lord of Contagion.
Death Guard players have several distinct gimmics:
- They have a Contagion bubble around their models, this area increases in inches as the battle progresses. This area affects your units negatively, in this case (I am unsure if there are other versions of this rule) it is a -1 Toughness to your models in range.
In his setup, there is a squad of Nurgle Terminators, called the Blight Lords on the right flank together with the Plague Burst and a Rhino with some Plague Marines. More Blight Lords in the Centre along with some pox walkers. On the Left flank, the Lord of contagion, most of the characters and two squads of Plague Marines.
Deployed behind the building, my Long Fands are not touching or in the ruin. I got first turn and they walked into the building. Regardless of the walls, Infantry models treat ruined buildings as Breackable and then took their full movement up to the one level inside.
Spending a Command Point to grant them Keen Senses, this negates the negative modifier for moving and shooting Heavy Weapons. So 4x Missile Launchers were brought to bear with the Armorium Cherub (Mine is a Servo Skull) was used immediately to get one more Missile shot for that turn.
In combination with this was the Land Raider, the Vindicator, both Razorbacks, Bjorn and the Contemptor Dreadnought. By the time I was done, there were no eligible targets fro the Redemptor that were in range and sight.
I had taken down a Rhino carrying Plague Marines, some died in that explosion. I also shot some of them dead after that. I managed to destroy one Bloat Drone and several other wounds on various models and squads.
The opponent was on the back foot, my initial blistering firepower taking him down in his ability to move and take control of the battlefield and destroying some of his combat ability.
The Space Wolves rushed forward to take control of key points of the battlefield. It had been my intention to have at least one turn where I score a max of 12 VP for Primary Objectives but also focussed on gaining Secondaries as I went.
I accomplished what I had set out to do and in the end this definately tipped things in my favour and I won the battle!
Victory to the Space Wolves!
