Hello there! This is Zak Ludick and this is my 4th game at the King of the Cape Tournament. By this time I had my rules more or less waxed and was really starting to play into the strengths of my army.
As luck would have it... I got to play on the same table as in the 3rd game. My opponent got to choose his deployment side, but ended up giving me the board side that I wanted!
Also, in this game I played against Tyranids.. not just any Nids... but the guy that I had a practice game against at Sword and Board about a week before the tournament.
In that match I allowed him to use every synergistic move his dino-bugs had up their sleeves and took note of this.
Let me give you a rundown of the Tyranid army:
Hive Fleet Kraken
- Swarmlord
- Tyranid Warrior Prime
- Neurothrope
- 3 Squads of Termagaunts
- 1 Squad of Gargoyles
- 2x Carnifex
- Exocrine (nasty piece of work!)
- 1 Squad of Zoanthropes
- A massive squad of Tyranid Warriors
- Small Ripper Swarm Squad
This army's main strenths are the following:
The Tyranid Warrior squad is the heaviest hitter.
His HQ's give lots of boosts to other units.
Psychic powers further strengthen units.
Zoanthropes are a problem.
The Swarmlord is a problem.
The Exocrine is a massive headace!
Using his Hive Fleet Kraken specialist moves, his Synapse commands and his Stratagems he takes the Tyranid Warriors, shunts across the board at massive speed and deal massive damage.
I got first turn. He had deployed in such a manner that only one squad of Termagaunts and one Carnifex was visible. Both were evaporated in my first turn of shooting.
After that I wasted no time taking control of the board. I baited that Warrior squad to come at me and quite predictably, they attempted to jump out in turn 1! He really shoudl wait until more units are commited on my side and THEN spring them forward.
I managed to control plenty of the board and instead of just charging into the enemy everywhere. Screening off troops holding objectives, this gave me the ability to gain plenty points!
Space Wolves Win!
Fickle Dice Gods!
Even though I won this match, there were some HAIRY bits where this sort of thing would happen:
I HIT on a 3 and avbove:
I cause damage on a 2 and above:
Regardless of the bad rolls, the superior strategy prevailed in the end and I managed to score a decent amount of VP!
Thank you for reading!
