My input for this is a carved wooden ring in the shape of an owl. I hope you like it!

Para quienes es la primera vez que leen mi contenido, les cuento que soy argentino, y aquí, aún falta bastante para el día de las madres. Ya que éste se festeja el tercer domingo de cada octubre.

Pero mamá se merece mucho más reconocimiento que solo un día al año.
Por esa razón, he querido participar de este concurso esculpiendo y tallando un anillo de madera para ella.

For those who are reading my content for the first time, I tell you that I am Argentine, and here, there is still a long way to go for Mother's Day. Since it is celebrated on the third Sunday of every October.

But mom deserves much more recognition than just one day a year.
For that reason, I wanted to participate in this contest by sculpting and carving a wooden ring for her.

Quizás no sea el mejor tutorial escrito que hayan visto. Quizás carezca de información específica y técnica sobre lo que he hecho. Pero ésto se debe a que, muchas de las cosas que hago, (tanto manualidades, como pinturas, maquillajes o artesanías), las hago improvisando como puedo con los materiales que encuentro en casa, porque no me interesa que el resultado sea perfecto, sino más bien, lo hago con el simple hecho de jugar un rato y disfrutar del proceso.

Hace aproximadamente un mes, pude adquirir una herramienta que deseaba demasiado, un mini torno Dremel.
Ésta herramienta tan versátil, cuenta con muchísimas piezas para tallar, esculpir, lijar, agujerear y mucho más!. Y ahora, mis queridos amigos, estoy en pleno disfrute como un niño con juguete nuevo.

It may not be the best written tutorial you've ever seen. Perhaps I lack specific and technical information about what I have done. But this is due to the fact that many of the things I do (both handicrafts, such as paintings, makeup or crafts), I do improvising as best I can with the materials I find at home, because I am not interested in the result being perfect, but rather rather, I do it by simply playing around and enjoying the process.

About a month ago, I was able to acquire a tool I wanted so badly, a Dremel mini lathe.
This versatile tool has many pieces to carve, sculpt, sand, drill and much more! And now, my dear friends, I am in full enjoyment like a child with a new toy.

La lechuza es el animal preferido de mamá (y uno de los míos), por lo que no me tomó mucho tiempo pensar en qué forma darle a mi anillo. Se que le encantará porque ama las joyas de cualquier tipo, pues es bien coqueta.

Saqué un trozo de madera del montón de leña que acumulamos en la parte de atrás de la casa. Éste pequeño trozo es de una madera bastante sólida y sin grietas, ideal para esculpir cosas pequeñas.

The owl is mom's favorite animal (and one of mine), so it didn't take me long to figure out what shape to give my ring. I know that she will love it because she loves jewelry of any kind, because she is very flirty.

I took a piece of wood from the pile of firewood that we accumulated in the back of the house. This small piece is of a fairly solid wood without cracks, ideal for sculpting small things.

Corté una lonja de 2 centímetros de alto con una pequeño serrucho y luego tracé el relieve de un anillo con lápiz para tener una guía.

Dios sabe el tiempo que me llevó hacer el agujero del centro 😂.

Se que existe una herramienta específica para sacar bocados circulares perfectos de una tabla de madera, pero yo solo contaba con mi mini torno, que claramente no contaba con ese accesorio. Así que, lo que hice fue hacer varios agujeros consecutivos, bordeando la parte interna del círculo dibujado,con una mecha fina.

Luego, introduje una mecha con lija para desgastar y emprolijar el círculo central.

I cut a slice 2 centimeters high with a small handsaw and then traced the relief of a ring with a pencil to have a guide.

God knows how long it took me to make the center hole 😂.

I know there is a specific tool to get perfect circular bites out of a wooden board, but I only had my mini lathe, which clearly did not have that accessory. So, what I did was make several consecutive holes, bordering the inner part of the drawn circle, with a fine wick.

Then, I inserted a wick with sandpaper to wear down and neaten the center circle.

Con el serrucho pequeño corté todas las esquinas del taco para ahorrarme tiempo a la hora de darle forma redondeada.

Los siguientes pasos, fueron básicamente desgastar mucha madera con la lija para pulir la forma de anillo.

Quería un anillo más bien redondeado, sin partes planas y esta lija es ideal para ello.

With the small handsaw I cut all the corners of the block to save time when giving it a round shape.

The next steps were basically roughing up a lot of wood with the sandpaper to polish the ring shape.

I wanted a more rounded ring, without flat parts and this sandpaper is ideal for it.

En la parte frontal del anillo, también con la lija, le di forma de corazón a lo que seria la cara de la lechuza.

Luego fui intercambiando algunas mechas de tallado muy muy pequeñas, y con ellas fui tallando los detalles finales como los ojos y el refieve del pico.

Para finalizar, cogí una lija de mano para emprolijar el acabado. Barnicé con laca transparente y listo!

Este anillo me llevo un día entero y otro día más para que seque completamente.

Mamá está lejos, nos separan casi 800 kilómetros asique ya lo tengo preparado para cuando viaje a verla, y se le que va a encantar. Espero les haya gustado a ustedes también ❤️.

On the front of the ring, also with the sandpaper, I shaped what would be the face of the owl into a heart.

Then I was exchanging some very very small carving wicks, and with them I was carving the final details such as the eyes and the relief of the beak.

To finish, I took a hand sandpaper to neaten the finish. I varnished with clear lacquer and voila!

This ring took me a whole day and another day for it to dry completely.

Mom is far away, almost 800 kilometers separate us, so I already have it ready for when I travel to see her, and I know she's going to love it. I hope you liked it too ❤️.
