I cut two pieces of wood, the same size, except one is thicker than the other. This is because the piece that will be the locket's lid is the thinner one, and the thicker one will have a cavity where you can add any photograph or image you might want. As a template, I drew a heart on paper, which I then used to draw on both pieces of wood, then carved and shaped them.
Corté dos trozos de madera, del mismo tamaño con la diferencia de que una pieza es más gruesa que la otra, esto porque la que será la tapa del relicario es la pieza más fina, y la más gruesa tendrá una cavidad donde se podrá agregar alguna fotografía o imagen que uno pueda desear. Como plantilla dibujé un corazón sobre papel, que luego lo usé para dibujar en ambas piezas de madera para luego tallarlas y darles forma.
The box cutter I regularly use to remove wood is already dulling. The truth is, this tool isn't made for this kind of work, so its blade dulls easily and sometimes even breaks. So, with the little bit of sharpness left, I was able to remove the wood from the holes. The goal is to follow the outline of the drawing and give both pieces a heart shape. I start with the thicker piece first.
El cúter que uso regularmente para retirar madera ya está perdiendo filo, la verdad es que esta herramienta no es para esta clase de trabajo por lo que su hoja pierde filo con facilidad, y hasta algunas veces se parte. Así que con el poco filo que le queda pude retirar la madera de los bordes, el propósito es seguir el trazo del dibujo y darle la forma de corazón a ambas piezas, comienzo en primer lugar por la pieza que es más gruesa.
Next, I continue the same process with the other piece until both are finished in the shape of a heart. After that, I begin lightly sanding the edges so that the heart doesn't appear flat, but rather delicately shaped. I sand both pieces until they are free of impurities.
Seguidamente con la otra pieza sigo el mis proceso hasta que ambas queden listas con forma de corazón. Después de eso comienzo a lijar un poco lo que serían los bordes para que el corazón no quede de una apariencia plana, sino delicadamente con una figura. Ambas piezas les paso la lija hasta dejarla libres de impurezas.
In the next step, I draw another heart inside the thicker piece. This is why it's denser: I need to create a cavity where I can place either a photo of our mother or any other image she likes. So, in the heart-shaped line I've made, I begin carving about 3 millimeters deep, just enough to place something inside. Then, using sandpaper, I clean the surface until it's smooth. Finally, I sand both pieces very well again, on both sides, while rounding the edge.
En el siguiente paso dibujo otro corazón hacia el interior de la pieza más gruesa, he aquí el motivo del por qué tiene más densidad, y es que hay que hacerle una cavidad donde se puede colocar ya sea una foto de nuestra madre o alguna imagen que le guste. Después con una lija voy limpiando la superficie hasta que quede lisa, por último vuelvo a lijar muy bien ambas piezas, por ambas caras mientras el borde queda más redondeado.
Once both pieces are ready, I attach a wire hook that will serve to hold the necklace, and before joining both pieces and turning them into a beautiful locket, I dip them in protective varnish so they have a more beautiful finish, and I will let it dry for a few minutes until all traces of moisture have disappeared.
Una vez listas ambas piezas le coloco un gancho de alambre que servirá para sujetarse del collar, y antes de unir ambas piezas y se conviertan en un hermoso reliciario, las sumerjo en barníz protctor para que tengan un acabado mas hermoso, y dejaré secar por algunos minutos hasta que todo resto de humedad ya haya desaparecido.
To finish, I added a screw that runs from the back and joins with the other piece. This way, the locket can open and close. I make sure it's screwed in securely and that the wood isn't damaged. This way, it's finished.
Para finalizar agregué un tornillo que va desde la parte trasera y se une con la otra pieza, de esta manera el relicario puede abrir y cerrar, me aseguro de que quede bien atornillado y que no se estropee la madera, de esta manera ha quedad finalizado.
