The other day, I took a little trip to Chemnitz, a city in the same state to make a ring from a skateboard. I found the workshop at one of the maker spaces in Chemnitz, Vector Lab, on Instagram and impressed by the beautiful rings. Even if it meant taking a one-hour train ride, I knew I had to go 😊
First, I chose a skateboard deck with colors I liked. Then I drilled a hole slightly smaller than my finger size, cut around it, and shaped it into a ring using an electric sander. Finally, I widened the hole to fit my finger perfectly. Since I had a train to catch, I asked for a piece of cloth soaked with wax so I could finish it at home.
Since the workshop was around dinner time, so everyone brought some toppings, Vector Lab provided pizza oven, dough and sauce to baked pizzas together. It turned into a really lovely pizza break in between intensive making.
I’m honestly so happy with the result. I’ve already been wearing the ring while working in the garden and in the kitchen. It feels like a small reminder of a quiet promise to myself "to enjoy my life as a maker."
I usually wear my Oura Ring (a healthcare smart ring), and I do love its sleek black, minimal design. But adding this colorful skateboard ring to my hand brings me another joy.
Vector Lab has an open day every Wednesday. You can either make something they offer or bring your own project and work on it there. When I showed the ring to my child, they immediately said they wanted to make one too—so I’m thinking of going back together during the Easter holidays.

先日、同じ州内のケムニッツに遊びに行ってきました。スケートボードから指輪を作るためです。ケムニッツにあるメイカースペースのひとつVector Labのワークショップで、インスタグラムの案内の写真で一目惚れ！一時間電車に乗ってでも行くぞと作りに行ったのでした。
スケートボードの板から好みの色のものを選んで、ドリルで指のサイズよりちょっと小さめの穴を開けます。穴の周りを切って、電動ヤスリで丸く成形して、指の太さまで穴を広げて出来上がり。帰りの電車があったので、ワックスを布に染み込ませたものを持たせてもらって家でワックスをかけました。
お夕飯時ということで、みんなで持ち寄った具を乗せてピザを焼いて、よいピザタイムを楽しみました。
結果にはもう大満足で、さっそく指輪をして庭仕事に台所仕事にしています ☺️ 「ものづくりを楽しんで生きるんだ」という決意のような何かを思い出させてくれる特別な指輪です。指輪というと、ずっとOura Ringをしっぱなしで、黒のシュッとしたクールなスタイルは気に入っているものの、スケートボードの色味が手元に加わってなんともうれしいです。
Vector Labは毎週水曜日がオープンデーで、ラボが用意しているものを作ってもいいし、自分で何かを持ってきて作ってもいいとのこと。子供に指輪を見せたら、自分でも作りたいとのことで、イースターのお休み期間中に子供を連れて行ってこようかなと思っています。
