I came back to business and trying to finish this commission I have. So, I stopped trying to make 2 Cuatros at the same time because I’m making more jigs, buying tools and helping my grandma. There’s enough time to make the things that were already paid.
Volvimos al ruedo con este encargo. Así que paré la producción de 2 Cuatros al mismo tiempo para hacer más útiles, comprar herramientas y ayudar a mi abuela. Solo hay tiempo suficiente para terminar los encargos.
Last time I showed progress of the neck, a lot of the main structure was already done. I took the time to glue the ornament of the head stock and cut it to shape. It has this same style of the previous one because the client asked for it. It’s nice to have something to become part of my construction style from the beginning.
La última vez que publiqué sobre el proceso de estos instrumentos, el mástil estaba casi completo. Se coloco el adorno del clavijero en su lugar y se cortó a su forma final. Tiene un estilo parecido al último cuatro que hice porque el cliente lo pidió así. Es interesante que este diseño ya se esté haciendo parte del estilo personal del taller.
Moving on to another part, we go straight to the back of the instrument. To get the pieces together first we need to remove any cutting marks. I use this plane’s blade to do it the easy way and save some sandpaper. After this is done, it’s time to use the plane to the joints even. I also have this ornament done in the workshop to put in the middle of the pieces.
Vamos con otra parte, específicamente, al fondo del cuatro. Para unir las piezas primero removemos cualquier marca de corte. Para esto utilizamos una hoja de cepillo. Esto acelera el proceso y nos ahorra papel de lija. Después de tener esto listo, es hora de usar el cepillo para lograr una buena junta. Además, tengo este adorno hecho en el taller para colocar entre ambas piezas.
Once the back is glued together, we need to reinforce the union of the two pieces. I used this piece of cedar and cut it to shape. Once this is in place, it’s time to trim some of the excess material from the back and have it shaped as a cuatro.
Después de pegar las piezas, hay que reforzar la junta. Utilicé esta pieza de cedro y la corté a la medida. Al tener esto listo, se le da la figura a la pieza removiendo algo de material.
As you can see there are some new tools in workshop. I had the chance to make a jig to join the backs and sound boards. This is better as it gives you the chance of applying pressure in the right way. This is to ensure the pieces are glued tight. The second new addition is this saw. It’s like the ones used in jewelry. And its function is the same, allow precise cuts and be able to change the angle of the cut while cutting. Undoubtedly, it’s a great addition to the toolshed. The last tool is a renewed mold for the sound board and back. This one has the position of several pieces that go inside the instrument. I needed to make a more precise one.
Como pueden ver el talle tiene herramientas nuevas. Tuve la oportunidad de construir un útil para juntar tapas armónicas y fondos. Esto mejor que el método que usaba antes porque se aplica presión a todas las partes de las piezas. Esto asegura que el pegado sea resistente. La segunda adición es un arco calador manual. Esto es como los que se usan para joyería. Su función es la misma, permitir cortes precisos y poder cambiar el ángulo del corte mientras se corta. Sin lugar a duda, es una adición valiosa a las herramientas. La última es una plantilla nueva. Esta tiene marcados los lugares donde deben colocarse varias piezas internas del instrumento. Necesitaba hacer una así de precisa.
