At the end of this post all the pieces of the Cuatro will be in place. Yes, with a lot of effort and details have gone into this build. Let’s start for some part. After the sound board is ready, it’s time to align it with the neck. This ensures the instrument doesn’t look crooked once it’s built. With the help of guiding lines and a ruler, you need to mark the middle of the neck and the middle of the sound board. Match the lines and you’re good to go! The extra step is to cut a piece of the sound board. This way the neck, which is square on this end can fit. Then, it’s time to use glue and some weights to keep the pieces in place.
Al final de este post el Cuatro estará ensamblado. Sí, se puso mucho esfuerzo y atención a los detalles para alcanzar este punto. Comencemos por esta parte. Después de terminar la tapa armónica, hay que ensamblarla con el mástil. Esto asegura que el instrumento no se vea torcido. Se hace uso de líneas guía en el centro del mástil y de la tapa armónica. Al alinear estas, básicamente ya estás listo. Lo siguiente es cortar un pedazo de la tapa armónica para que el mástil pueda encajar. Luego, se aplica el pegamento y se utiliza algún peso para mantener todo en su lugar.
Then it’s time to let this first stage of the assembly rest our Solera mold. Fit the jigs so it stays in place. When this is ready, it’s time to bend the sides. To start this, you need to hydrate the wood, otherwise, it will break. So, we let it rest in water for some time while our bender heats up. Once the wood is soaked and the bender is hot, it’s time to bend. This is a difficult thing. In one hand, you might think the wood is going to break, but if you’re not firm, it won’t get into shape. You can test how much pressure you need for this task. Once you have picked up the pace, you’ll need to get the piece around the template to see if it fits. When it is done, you can lay it to rest on top of the sound board. You’ll need something to apply pressure from the inside, so it can retain it’s new shape.
Ahora es tiempo de poner esta primera forma sobre nuestra Solera. Se fijan los tacos para que no se mueva. Después de esto, hay que doblar los aros. Before the sides can be glues in place, we need to carve the internal heel. This is a piece of wood that connects all the pieces of the Cuatro’s body. For this, we just need to carve its sides a little to give it a rounder shape. Then, this is on the lower end of the sound board. Here it will serve its purpose.
Antes de colocar los aros, necesitamos trabajar el tacón interno. Este sirve de unión para todas las piezas de la caja del Cuatro. Para esto, solo tenemos que redondear una cara. Luego, se coloca en el borde inferior de la tapa armónica. Aquí cumplirá su propósito
Now we can glue the sides in place. We will need to cut some of it to fit the shape. Once both sides are cut, we can apply glue and use pressure to keep it in place. Additional pressure might be needed to ensure it’s glued properly.
Ahora podemos pegar los aros. Antes hay que cortarlos a la medida. Cuando ambos aros están a la medida, se puede aplicar el pegamento y ponerlos en su lugar. Se necesitará presión interna además de presión desde arribar para asegurar una unión buena.
While the sides are gluing, we can work on additional reinforcements. Here you can see blocks and strips of wood. The strips are to widen the sides of their top side. This way it ensures a bigger contact surface with the back of the instrument. The blocks are going onto the sound board, this way it will hold better to the sides. There are many ways of making these pieces. I have to go for the traditional one because I don’t own any power tools. But it is a lot of fun nonetheles.
Mientras se pegan los aros, podemos trabajar en los refuerzos adicionales. Aquí pueden ver los peones y los arillos. Los últimos van en el lado superior de los aros. Esto asegura una mayor superficie de contacto con el fondo del instrumento. Los peones van en la tapa armónica. Estos sujetan la tapa a los aros. Hay muchas maneras de hacer estos refuerzos. A mi me toca ir por la tradicional porque no tengo herramientas eléctricas. Pero es bastante entretenido.
Here’s a detail before closing up the instrument. I wanted to write something cheesy, but settled down for something quick and a thank you note. This little instrument is going far away from home.

Once the sides are on their places, it’s time for the reinforcements. Gluing the blocks is simple, you just need to keep the same space between them. You can do this as you like. In my case, I used a think piece of wood. The strips of wood are another thing. I put them in water while I did the blocks. The cuts in them give the wood certain degree of flexibility. While they are soaked, they can bend with no heat. But I needed to put some pegs to help them get on shape.
Una vez que los aros están en su lugar, es tiempo de colocar los refuerzos. Comenzamos con los peones. Esto es simple, solo hay que mantener la misma distancia entre ellos. Puedes usar el método que desees. Yo utilizo una tira de madera. Los arillos necesitan más trabajo. Los dejé remojando en agua mientras colocaba los peones. With the strips of shape, it’s time to glue them. After applying the glue, we put them on again and put the pegs to hold them into place. While the glue settles, it’s time to work on other reinforcements for the sides. These ones are optional, but they give strength to the build, so it highly recommended to put them in the instrument if you want to protect it from any hits it could take in the future.
Cuando los arillos ya tienen la forma, es hora de pegarlos. Después de aplicar el pegamento, se colocan las pinzas nuevamente para mantenerlos en su lugar. Mientras el pegamento se seca, es tiempo de trabajar en otros refuerzos para los aros. Estos son opcionales, pero brindan resistencia al instrumento. Finally, after all the reinforcements are in place, the heels have been leveled and any rough surface sanded, it’s time to get the back in place. Some of the reinforcements on the back had to be carved a little, which is completely normal. Also, let’s not forget that we have to put the label here or there will be no point in making the instrument. As you can see, I used some heavy weights to ensure there’s pressure all around the instrument. There’s also some cord to help with extra pressure. And thus, the Cuatro is closed.
Después de colocar los refuerzos, emparejar los tacones, lijar cualquier superficie áspera, es hora de colocar el fondo. Se rebajaron algunas de las barras del fondo, lo cual es completamente normal. Tampoco podemos olvidarlos de la etiqueta. Sin ella, hacer el instrumento no tiene chiste. Como pueden ver utilicé algunos pesos para asegurarme de que hay presión en todo el instrumento.
