There are times when children tend to leave things to the last minute, things like homework or school activities. Well, recently a friend called me to do a job for her daughter, a map of the country.
I arrived at the place and started to look for the materials she had, being that she only had two paints in good condition and the other three were completely dry.
Hay ocasiones en que los niños suelen dejar las cosas para última hora, cosas como los trabajos o actividades escolares. Pues bien, hace poco una amiga me llamó para que le hiciera un trabajo a su hija, un mapa del país.
Llegué al lugar y empecé a buscar los materiales con los que contaba, siendo que solo tenía dos pinturas en buenas condiciones y las otras tres estaban completamente secas.
We were in trouble, so I had to get more creative than usual. Luckily the dried paints were still in their respective containers, so I took them all out and left the jars completely empty, as you can see in the picture above...
There are ways to reuse this paint even if it is already dry. Here in my country it is known as "cold paint", it is a water based paint. So, I took the dried paint and put it in a small pan with water.
Estábamos en problemas, así que tuve que ponerme más creativo de lo normal. Por suerte las pinturas secas aún estaba en sus respectivos envases, así que las saqué todas y dejé los frascos completamente vacíos, como pueden ver en la imagen de arriba...
Hay maneras de reutilizar esta pintura aunque ya esté seca. Aquí en mi país se conoce como "Pintura al frío", es una pintura a base de agua. Por ello, tomé la pintura seca y la coloqué en una pequeña cacerola con agua.
I left it on the stove to warm up over low heat.
The hot water began to break up the dried paint and return it to its liquid state. Not the same, but close to what it was.
La dejé en la estufa para que se calentara a fuego bajo.
El agua caliente comenzó a deshacer la pintura seca y a devolverle su estado líquido. No igual, pero parecido a lo que era.
I started to beat it to grind the paint as much as I could and in the end it was like a paste.
What you see in the image below is what I got when I mixed all the dry white and pink paint. This paste would be useful to create more colors when mixing the others, at least I had something to work with.
Comencé a darle golpes para triturar lo más que pude la pintura y al final quedó como una pasta.
Lo que ven en la imagen de abajo es lo que obtuve al mezclar toda la pintura seca de color blanco y rosado. Esta pasta serviría para crear más colores al mezclar los otros, al menos ya tenía algo con lo cual trabajar.
I should clarify that this does not always work. For example, I tried to do it with the green, but I did not get too intense a color nor did it form the paste that I made with the previous paint.
I think this green color was too dry or its composition was different.
Debo aclarar que esto no siempre funciona. Por ejemplo, intenté hacerlo con el verde, pero no obtuve un color demasiado intenso ni se formó la pasta que hice con la pintura anterior.
Creo que este color verde sí estaba muy seco o su composición era otra.
In any case, by repeating the same process with the green I managed to obtain an apple green color, not the original intense and dark green.
Below you can see the two paints that I managed to recycle from three containers of dry paint.
En cualquier caso, al repetir el mismo proceso con el verde logré obtener un color verde manzana, no el verde intenso y oscuro original.
A continuación pueden ver las dos pinturas que logré reciclar de tres envases de pintura seca.
As I told you, I had to do a school assignment, in this case a map of Venezuela. It is not always easy to capture a map on a large sheet of paper, so here's a trick.
First I made the small drawing of the map on a sheet of paper, then I cut it out and painted it with a dark marker. Here you can see what the small map looks like.
Como les dije, debía hacer un trabajo escolar, en este caso un mapa de Venezuela. No siempre es fácil plasmar un mapa en una lámina de gran tamaño, así que aquí un truco.
Primero hice el dibujo pequeño del mapa en una hoja, luego lo recorté y lo pinté con un marcador oscuro. Aquí pueden ver cómo luce el pequeño mapa.

Now for the interesting part, the trick to capture this small map on a much larger sheet of paper.
It is quite simple, but it is a great idea. We just have to put the map very close to a lamp and project the shadow on the sheet, this will serve as a guide to make the drawing.
Here you can see how the shadow looks on the sheet together with the strokes I made thanks to this one. Of course, I only used the reference shadow for the initial strokes, I improved the details using a real reference map.
Ahora lo interesante, el truco para plasmar este pequeño mapa en una lámina de papel mucho más grande.
Es bastante simple la verdad, pero es una idea genial. Solo debemos poner el mapa muy cerca de una lámpara y proyectar la sombra en la lámina, esto nos servirá de guía para hacer el dibujo.
Aquí pueden ver cómo se ve la sombra en la lámina junto a los trazos que hice gracias a este. Desde luego, solo usé la sombra de referencia para los trazos iniciales, los detalles los mejoré usando un mapa real de referencia.
This is what the drawing of the map looked like once all the finishing touches were done. The idea is to cut it out and paste it on another sheet, to create a relief effect that I will show you later.
But let's go back to the main topic of the publication, the paintings.
Así quedó el dibujo del mapa una vez terminado todos los acabados. La idea es recortarlo y pegarlo en otra lámina, para crear un efecto de relieve que les mostraré más adelante.
Pero vamos a volver al tema principal de la publicación, las pinturas.
I told them that I only had two that were in good condition and that is the fuchsia color that has the number 3 (see the image below) and a little, almost none, of red paint. The red paint was not going to be enough for anything because it was very little and fuchsia was the color I had the most of.
So I mixed the little bit of red that was left with fuchsia (3), pink (1) and green (2). That's how I got this kind of brick color that you see in the image below (4).
I got color number 5 by mixing a little of the brick red (4) with the rest of the remaining apple green and a little more pink. That gave me a lighter color but in the same scale.
Important note. For the pink color (1), I added a little fuchsia (3) to give it more intensity. Likewise, I added some glue to both this pink and the two new ones I got (4, 5), and mixed it well to make the paint thicker.
Les dije que solo tenía dos que estaba en buenas condiciones y es la de color fucsia que tiene el número 3 (vean la imagen de abajo) y un poco, casi nada, de pintura roja. La pintura roja no me iba a alcanzar para nada porque era muy poco y el fucsia era el color del que más disponía.
Por ello, mezclé el poquito de rojo que quedaba con fucsia (3), rosado (1) y verde (2). Fue así como obtuve esta suerte de color ladrillo que ven en la imagen de abajo (4).
Obtuve el color número 5 mezclando un poco del rojo ladrillo (4) con el resto del color verde manzana que quedó y un poco más de rosado. Eso me dio un color más claro pero de la misma escala.
Nota importante. Para el color rosado (1), agregué un poco de fucsia (3) para darle mayor intensidad. De igual manera, agregué un poco de pegamento tanto a este rosado como a los dos nuevos que obtuve (4, 5), y lo mezclé bien para hacer que la pintura quedara más espesa.
Green I wouldn't use at all, so I used pink (1), fuchsia (3) and the two brick colors (4 and 5). All colors derived from red, of the same scale, so it would serve to make this map.
As I said, I had more fuchsia available, so this was the color I used to paint almost the entire map.
El verde no lo utilizaría para nada, así que usé el rosado (1), el fucsia (3) y los dos colores ladrillos (4 y 5). Todos colores derivados del rojo, de la misma escala, así que serviría para hacer este mapa.
Como dije, disponía más de color fucsia, así que este fue el color que usé para pintar casi todo el mapa.

I used the brick color to paint another of the smaller Provinces or States, as it was the color I had less of.
The other two colors I used to paint the others, keeping the scale from the darkest to the lightest.
El color ladrillo lo usé para pintar otra de las Provincias o Estados más pequeños, pues era el color del que tenía menos.
Los otros dos colores los utilicé para pintar los demás, manteniendo la escala del más oscuro al más claro.

Once finished, I cut out the map completely and placed it on top of another much larger and cleaner sheet.
Below you can see it, it looks very flat and without the relief I showed you.
Una vez terminado, recorté el mapa por completo y lo coloqué encima de otra lámina mucho más grande y limpia.
A continuación pueden verlo, se ve muy plano y sin el relieve que les mostré.
To make the relief I only had to crumple the map a little and that was it, it looked like a relief terrain seen from above, like those three-dimensional maps you see on the internet.
Once this was done I gave the map and the sheet to my friend's daughter, so she could finish her work.
Para hacer el relieve solo tuve que arrugar un poco el mapa y listo, quedó como si fuera un terreno con relieve visto desde arriba, como esos mapas tridimensionales que uno ve en internet.
Una vez hecho esto entregué el mapa y la lámina a la hija de mi amiga, para que ella terminara de hacer su trabajo.
The intention was to help her, because he's not very good at crafts, so I just did that and left the rest to her. She had to make a banner for an exhibition, and according to what her mom told me, it turned out great.
As you can see, you can do interesting things even if you don't have the necessary materials, you just have to look for ways to recycle or reuse the ones you have, even if you think they are already damaged or can't be used.
